Shir HaShirim
It is written in the
Zohar HaKadosh (Vayera—36, 37):
36) “He [Rabbi Eliezer] taught him [Rabbi Akiva] 216 interpretations hidden in the verses of ‘Shir HaShirim.’ Tears streamed from Rabbi Akiva’s eyes. And the fire returned, surrounding them as it had at first. When they reached the passage, ‘Sustain me with flagons, refresh me with apples, for I am lovesick,’ Rabbi Akiva, unable to endure any longer, raised his voice in weeping and roared like a bull. He could not utter a word because of his great awe of the Shechinah that was present there.
37) And he taught him all the profound meanings and sublime secrets contained in ‘Shir HaShirim.’ He made him swear that he would not use any passage found in it, lest the Creator destroy the world because of it. For He does not wish His creations to make use of it, because of the great holiness contained within it. Then Rabbi Akiva departed, sobbing.”
Segula for Yeshuot
Rav Adir Amrusi transmits from his teacher,
Rav Meir Mazuz of Yeshivat Kisse Rahamim (and Rav Mazuz received it from earlier sources), a segula involving Shir HaShirim.
Shir HaShirim consists of eight chapters. One chapter should be read each day, so that the entire Song of Songs is read over the course of a week:
Sunday—chapter 1,
Monday—chapter 2,
Tuesday—chapter 3,
Wednesday—chapter 4,
Thursday—chapter 5,
Friday—chapter 6,
Shabbat—chapters 7 and 8.
Thus, the entire book of Shir HaShirim is read in one week. In addition, there is a Sephardic minhag to read all of Shir HaShirim on Erev Shabbat.
The Mekubalim say that those who read Shir HaShirim in this manner:
- will not see Gehinnom,
- will receive an ample livelihood,
- will merit a suitable shidduch,
- will receive a complete healing,
- will acquire Yirat Shamayim (fear of Heaven).
