Shir HaShirim for Ayelet HaShachar
It is related in “Sichot HaRan” — the Conversations of Rabbi Nissim ben Reuven — that he instructed a sick man who had visited his home to rise before dawn for the pre-dawn prayer of Ayelet HaShachar and recite the entire “Shir HaShirim” (Song of Songs).
He said that all forms of healing found in the world are included in “Shir HaShirim.” Indeed, the sick man’s health changed at that very moment (after following the instruction), and he was healed.
It is said in the Zohar HaKadosh:
36) “He [Rabbi Eliezer] taught him [Rabbi Akiva] 216 meanings hidden in the verses of “Shir HaShirim.” Tears streamed from Rabbi Akiva’s eyes. The fire returned, surrounding them as it had at first. And when they reached the passage: “Sustain me with flagons, refresh me with apples, for I am lovesick,” Rabbi Akiva, unable to bear it any longer, raised his voice in weeping and roared like an ox, unable to utter a word because of his profound awe of the Shechinah that was present there.
37) He taught him all the depths and exalted secrets contained in “Shir HaShirim.” He made him swear that he would not use any passage contained in it, lest the Creator destroy the world because of it. For He does not wish His creations to make use of it, because of the great holiness contained within it. Then Rabbi Akiva left, sobbing.” (Zohar on Va’era, 35, 36)
Upon learning that there are 216 meanings in “Shir HaShirim,” the first thing that comes to mind is that 216 is the gematria of the word “gevurah” — judgments.
And the 72-letter Name of Hashem used at the splitting of Yam Suf has 216 letters.
The name of the prophet Habakkuk, who was born through a miracle and brought back to life from the dead, also equals 216. The word יראה — “yirah” (fear) — likewise has a gematria of 216.
In other words, through Shir HaShirim it is possible to remove all harsh judgments.
