Tikun Chatzot - Tikun Leah and Tikun Rachel (Transliteration)

Tikun Chatzot (Tikun Leah and Tikun Rachel) - The Prayer of David HaMelech

The prayer composed by David HaMelech was added to the three obligatory prayers (Shacharit, Mincha, and Arvit) and is called Tikun Chatzot (the Rectification of Midnight). This prayer consists mainly of the Psalms of David. The Talmud (Berachot 3b) teaches that King David himself would always wake at midnight to sing his psalms to the Almighty, and it is therefore held that he instituted this prayer. The Kabbalists call it the fourth prayer. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 107a) relates that David prayed to the Creator, saying: "You are called the G-d of Avraham, the G-d of Yitzchak, and the G-d of Ya'akov; I wish that You be called the G-d of David as well." It emerges that just as Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya'akov established the three main prayers, David likewise established an additional prayer, although it is not considered obligatory. Midnight is considered an "Et Ratzon" (a time of Divine favor, Talmud, Yevamot 72a), when the light of the Creator's Kindness is renewed before the start of a new day. According to the Vilna Gaon, the four times are also hinted at in the passage of the Shema: "when you sit in your home, when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise" - these hint at the four prayers, corresponding to the four parts of the day: before noon (a time for sitting), after noon (a time for walking), night until midnight (a time for lying down), and after midnight (a time for rising). It turns out that for these four times, Avraham, Yitzchak, Ya'akov, and David established four prayers - Shacharit, Mincha, Arvit, and Tikun Chatzot. Tikun Chatzot may be recited at any time after midnight until the end of the night, but there is no prohibition against reciting these psalms at any other time as well. In any case, there is a mitzvah to remember the destruction of the Temple, and although night is the most fitting time for this (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 1:2, and the Vilna Gaon there), it can be done at any other time as well. According to the custom of the Arizal, during the Three Weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av (Bein HaMetzarim), Tikun Chatzot is also recited in the afternoon. Tikun Chatzot is divided into two parts: 1) Tikun Rachel - the sadder portion, for the life of Rachel Imeinu was also very difficult. This part of the Tikun is a cry of the soul; we recite psalms that speak of the destruction of the Temple and the exile of the Jewish people. The culmination of this section is the final chapter of the Book of Eichah (Lamentations of Yirmiyahu). 2) Tikun Leah - this part also mentions our longing to behold the greatness of the Creator in the rebuilt Temple. At the end, we recite David's Psalm of Repentance. This order of Tikun Chatzot is taken from "Sha'ar HaKavanot" of the Arizal (zt"l). Tikun Rachel is not recited on the following days: Shabbat, Yom Tov, Rosh Chodesh, and the eve of Rosh Hashanah. The period from the eve of Yom Kippur until the end of the month of Tishrei. All the days of Chanukah, the 15th of Shevat, both days of Purim (and in a leap year, both days of Purim Katan as well). Throughout the entire month of Nissan, the 14th of Iyar (Pesach Sheni), the 18th of Iyar (Lag BaOmer), the first 12 days of the month of Sivan, and the 15th of Av.

Remember, L-rd, what has befallen us; look and see our disgrace! Our inheritance has passed to strangers, our homes to foreigners. We have become orphans, fatherless; our mothers are like widows. We drink our own water for money; our own wood comes only at a price. They pursue us, close upon our necks; we are weary and are given no rest. We stretched out a hand to Egypt, to Assyria, to be sated with bread. Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their iniquities. Our skin is as hot as an oven from the burning heat of famine. They ravished the women in Zion, the maidens in the cities of Judah. Princes were hanged by their hands; elders were shown no respect. Young men were made to grind millstones; boys stumbled under loads of wood. The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music. The joy of our hearts has ceased; our dancing has turned into mourning. The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned. For this our heart is sick; for these things our eyes grow dim - for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, over which foxes prowl. You, L-rd, remain forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation. Why do You forget us forever, forsake us for so long? Turn us to You, L-rd, and we shall return; renew our days as of old. For if You have utterly rejected us, You would be exceedingly angry with us. Turn us to You, L-rd, and we shall return; renew our days as of old. Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your inheritance! Your holy people possessed the land but briefly - our enemies have trampled Your Sanctuary. But now, L-rd, You are our Father; we are the clay and You are our potter, and we are all the work of Your hand. Do not be so exceedingly angry, L-rd, and do not remember iniquity forever - behold, we beg You, we are all Your people. Your holy cities have become a wilderness, Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. Our holy and glorious House, where our fathers praised You, has been burned by fire, and all that was dear to us lies in ruins. Will You restrain Yourself after all this, L-rd? Will You be silent and afflict us so greatly? On your walls, Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen; all day and all night, always, they shall not be silent. You who remind the L-rd, take no rest for yourselves! And give Him no rest, until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise on the earth. The L-rd has sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: I will not give your grain anymore as food for your enemies, and foreigners will not drink your wine, for which you labored; For those who gather it shall eat it and praise the L-rd, and those who harvest it shall drink it in the courts of My holiness. You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to favor her, for the appointed time has come. For Your servants delight in her stones, and cherish her very dust. The L-rd will rebuild Jerusalem; He will gather the exiles of Yisrael.
