Names of the Mothers of the Righteous—a Segula for Salvation
Shimush Tehillim HaKadmon reveals that Tehillim 144 was recited by the mother of the judge Shimshon HaGibor for her son during his battles with the Philistines. Shimshon's birth was extraordinary—the angel appeared to his mother twice and promised that she would bear a child, on the condition that the child become a nazir. The power of nezirut enabled Shimshon to become imbued with the spirit of prophecy. The mother of Shimshon HaGibor was named Tzelponit (she who saw a shadow)—the Midrash says that she first saw a certain shadow, and then turned and saw an angel. And his sister was Neshyan (apparently, she kissed him many times before he set out for battle). (Bava Batra 91a) Shimush Tehillim HaKadmon continues by saying that David HaMelech's mother also recited the 144th psalm for her son during his battles with the Philistines. 1.
