How Evil Comes into Being

The Ramak—Rabbi Moshe Cordovero (of blessed memory)—teaches in Tomer Devorah: “With every wrongful act a person commits, an evil angel comes into being in the world. It ascends to G-d and asks for sustenance. The Creator says to it: ‘The one because of whom you were created will take care of you.’ Then the evil angel descends and attaches itself to the person whose wrongful act brought it into being. Now, when the Almighty sends this person life force—holiness that is meant to be transformed into health, material and spiritual blessings—the evil angel takes a portion of this holiness for itself. When these angels become numerous, illness and poverty befall the person. In addition, the evil angels arouse in a person the desire to commit wrongful acts again and again. As we can see, all these forces of evil exist only at the expense of holiness.” (Ramak, Tomer Devorah, translated by Rav Ben-Tzion Melamed)
