Tehillim 82, or Where David HaMelech Encoded His Mother's Name—Nitzevet bat Adael
Many have heard of the segula associated with the name of
David HaMelech's mother, but few know where in Tehillim David HaMelech encoded his mother's name.
In
Tehillim 82:1, David HaMelech writes:
אֱֽלֹהִ֗ים
נִצָּ֥ב בַּעֲדַת־אֵ֑ל בְּקֶ֖רֶב אֱלֹהִ֣ים יִשְׁפֹּֽט
— “Elohim nitzav ba'adat El, bekerev Elohim yishpot” — (G-d stands [is present] in the congregation of G-d; among the judges He judges).
If we examine the phrase
נִצָּ֥ב בַּעֲדַת־אֵ֑ל, we can discover how David HaMelech skillfully concealed his mother's name:
נִצָּ֥בת בּ ַעֲדאֵ֑ל.
Since October 7, 2023, during the war in Gaza, the name of David HaMelech's mother has become the most popular mantra-prayer for the success and good fortune of our soldiers.
It is noteworthy that the word
עזה—Gaza—also has the gematria of
82, corresponding to the number of the psalm in which David HaMelech's mother's name is encoded.
Moreover,
82 is the gematria of the powerful prayer
אנא בכח—Ana Bekoach, which is based on the
42-letter Name of G-d.
Reciting Nitzevet bat Adael 17 Times
Rabbi Yaakov Culi revealed in the
Me'am Lo'ez 250 years ago that Hannah—the mother of Samuel HaNavi—was the first to recite the name of King David's mother,
Nitzevet bat Adael,
17 times when she went to Shiloh to the Mishkan, knowing the secret that
Nitzavet ניצבת consists of the same letters as “
Nitzbet”
ניצבת, the name of an angel whom we find in the writings concerning
Samuel HaNavi.
[Judging by the vocalization, David's mother's name should in fact be pronounced Nitzevet, contrary to the commonly used Natzevet on Russian-language websites.]
Another great kabbalist,
Rabbi Chaim Palaggi, also used this segula daily 150 years ago.
The unique feature of this segula is that after it is recited, it becomes “
pote'ach et ha-tefillah”—the key to opening the Gates of Prayer—and transforms the moment of prayer into an “
Et Ratzon”—a time of favor, when our requests are accepted.
Rabbi Chaim Palaggi, based on what is written in the
Holy Zohar, teaches that whoever recites the name of King David's mother immediately after Birkat HaShachar will receive more than he deserves—“
mi she-zakai yekabel yoter.”
The secret is that reciting
Nitzevet bat Adael 17 times is,
al pi ha-sod (according to the secret), tov (good).
Gaon Rabbi Emanuel Mizrachi emphasizes that it is especially beneficial to recite David HaMelech's mother's name in the morning on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—immediately after Birkat HaShachar.
Prayer
Nitzevet bat Adael [recite 17 times]
“Bizchut Nitzevet bat Adael, aseh lema'an shimcha, aseh lema'an yeminecha, aseh lema'an mikdashecha, aseh lema'an Mashiach tzidkecha, aseh lema'ancha—lo lema'anenu”—
(In the merit of Nitzevet bat Adael, act for the sake of Your Name, act for the sake of Your right hand, act for the sake of Your Temple, act for the sake of Your righteous Mashiach, act for Your own sake—and not for our sake).
