Reading Tehillim 119 According to the Letters of a Name—the Segula of Rabbeinu Chida
Reading Tehillim 119 According to the Letters of a Name—the Segula of Rabbeinu ChidaRabbeinu Chida teaches that anyone suffering from the consequences of Middat ha-Din (the attribute of judgment) should immediately gather 10 Jews (a minyan) and recite all the pesukim of Tehillim that begin with the letters of his name. For example, if one is praying for someone named Moshe משה , they should read all the chapters of Tehillim beginning with the letter (mem) מ, then all the chapters beginning with the letter (shin) ש, and afterward all the chapters of Tehillim beginning with the letter (hei) ה. In addition, they should recite the Tehillim corresponding to the letters of the mother's name.In the event of a calamity in the city where the person lives (chas ve-shalom), the letters of the city's name should also be recited. This is an excellent segula for salvation from any misfortune, as it is written at the end of the book Kitzur Ha-Shelah (geonei olam). He also advises that when someone is seriously ill, the patient's name and the names of his or her parents should be discreetly divided among the family members, so that they recite all the pesukim of Tehillim corresponding to those letters for 40 days. (If it is not possible to gather a minyan, they should recite them on their own.)Abbreviated VersionIn the abbreviated version, one recites the letters of the name according to Psalm 119, which consists of 22 verses corresponding to all the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each section of Tehillim 119 consists of eight verses. This hints to us that if the number 7 - (ז) symbolizes the material forces of nature and the world was created through seven spiritual attributes, then the number 8 (ח) is supernatural: it rises above the boundaries of the laws of nature and enables one to transcend them. When David HaMelech composed this psalm of Tehillim in this manner, he invested its recitation with a special power.Rabbeinu Chida reveals this manner of reciting Tehillim as a way to transcend ordinary limitations in one's conversation with the Creator. By reading Tehillim 119 according to a person's name, with each section containing eight verses, one can bring a person beyond the confines of his problems, worries, and troubles. How It Is Recited1.
