Tikkun HaNefesh — The Text of the Prayer of Rabbi Naftali Katz

Tikkun HaNefesh — The Text of the Prayer of Rabbi Naftali Katz

Tikkun HaNefesh consists of 12 Psalms (10 central ones, along with an introductory and a concluding Psalm), selected by the great 17th-century sage, Rabbi Naftali Katz.
A great Torah scholar and renowned Kabbalist, Rabbi Naftali Katz was known as a miracle worker and healer.

In 1718, Rabbi Naftali Katz decided to travel to the Land of Israel. However, upon reaching Istanbul, he ascended to the higher yeshivah (and was buried in Istanbul). Thanks to Rabbi Yeshayahu Yosef Pinto, this Tikkun was revived and made available to us.

The uniqueness of this collection of Psalms is that throughout the centuries it has brought deliverance and salvation to Jews suffering from various troubles and illnesses.
These very 12 Psalms saved Rabbi Naftali from danger and death (he was held captive by the Tatars and sentenced to death by the authorities, but miraculously escaped).

Tikkun HaNefesh:

Before reciting Tikkun HaNefesh, one should contemplate the six commandments that a person must always keep in mind when fulfilling a positive commandment—“do”:

1) “Anochi Hashem Elohecha asher hotzeticha me’eretz Mitzrayim mibeit avadim” —
(I am the L-rd your G-d, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage);

2) “Lo yihyeh lecha elohim acherim al panai” —
(You shall have no other gods besides Me);

3) “Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad” —
(Hear, O Israel: the L-rd is our G-d, the L-rd is One);

4) “Ve’ahavta et Adonai Elohecha bechol levavcha uvechol nafshecha uvechol me’odecha” —
(You shall love the L-rd your G-d with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might);

5) “Et Adonai Elohecha tira” —
(You shall fear the L-rd your G-d);

6) “Velo taturu acharei levavchem ve’acharei eineichem, asher atem zonim achareihem” —
(You shall not follow after the inclinations of your hearts and eyes, going astray after them).

6. Flash lightning and scatter them; send forth Your arrows and confound them.
7. Stretch forth Your hand from on high; rescue me and save me from mighty waters, from the hand of foreigners.
8. Whose mouths speak falsehood and whose right hand is a hand of deceit.
9. O G-d, I will sing a new song to You; with a ten-stringed harp I will sing praise to You.
10. Who grants salvation to kings, Who rescues David His servant from the evil sword.
11. Rescue me and save me from the hand of foreigners, whose mouths speak falsehood and whose right hand is a hand of deceit.
12. So that our sons may be like plants, nurtured in their youth; our daughters like cornerstones, beautifully fashioned like those of a palace.
13. Our storehouses are full, providing food of every kind; our flocks increase by thousands, by tens of thousands in our fields.
14. Our leaders bear the burden; there is no breach, no going forth, and no cry of distress in our streets.
15. Fortunate is the people for whom this is so; fortunate is the people whose G-d is the L-rd.

After Tikkun HaNefesh, recite:

— “Gal einai ve’abitah nifla’ot miToratecha” —
(Open my eyes, that I may behold the hidden wonders of Your Torah);

— “Hashivah li sason yishecha veruach nedivah tismecheni” —
(Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and may a generous spirit sustain me);

— “Or zarua latzadik ul’yishrei lev simchah” —
(Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright of heart);

— “Aseh imi ot letovah, veyiru son’ai veyevoshu, ki Atah Adonai azartani venichamtani” —
(Show me a sign for good; my enemies will see it and be ashamed, for You, G-d, have helped and comforted me);

— “Lishu’atecha kiveiti Adonai” —
(I hope for Your salvation, O L-rd);

— “Hamalach hago’el oti mikol ra yevarech et hane’arim veyaikare vahem Shemi veshem avotai Avraham veYitzchak veyidgu larov bekerev ha’aretz” — (May the angel who redeemed me from all evil bless these lads; may my name and the names of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, be called upon them, and may they multiply greatly in the midst of the Land);

— “Ana Adonai hoshi’ah na, ana Adonai hatzlicha na” —
(Please, O L-rd, save us; please, O L-rd, grant us success);

— “Ner leragli devarecha ve’or lintivati” —
(Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light upon my path);

— “Ve’et ha’anashim asher petach habayit hiku basanverim mikaton ve’ad gadol ve’yilu limtzo hapetach” —
(And the people who were at the entrance of the house were struck with blindness, from the smallest to the greatest, so that they wearied themselves searching for the entrance).

At the end, say seven times in one breath:
Uriel — Uriel — Uriel — Uriel — Uriel — Uriel — Uriel.
