Segula of the Mekubalim: Lighting Candles on Lag BaOmer Corresponding to the Seven Sefirot
Segula of the Mekubalim: Lighting Candles on Lag BaOmer Corresponding to the Seven Sefirot
Once a year, on Lag BaOmer, there is a beautiful, time-tested segula from the Sephardic Mekubalim of earlier generations.
Lag BaOmer is the day when the judgments are sweetened, and one can take advantage of this exceptionally beautiful segula.
Candles are a symbol of the soul, as it says in Mishlei (20:270): נֵר יְהוָה נִשְׁמַת אָדָם - “Ner Hashem – Nishmat Adam” (the candle of G-d is the soul of man);
The structure of the Sefirot is one of the foundations of the Zohar HaKadosh (the principal work of Rashbi). It is through the Sefirot that the life-giving Light of the Infinite One, Ein Sof, descends into this world.
Lag BaOmer—the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer—is when, through the Sefirot, we count the 49 days (seven days for each of the seven weeks) leading up to Shavuot.
Seven candles corresponding to the seven Sefirot contain all this symbolism.
Seven candles are lit corresponding to the seven lower emotional Sefirot, the middot, which the Jewish people refine during the days of the Omer.
As we light each candle, we ask for only one thing and pray to the Almighty, blessed be His Name, that in the merit of Rabbeinu HaKadosh, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, we may be worthy of witnessing miracles.
1. Ner Rishon – the first candle
I light this candle corresponding to the Sefirat HaChesed, in the merit of the soul of our holy master, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. May his merits protect us. Amen!
2. Ner Sheni – the second candle
I light this candle corresponding to the Sefirat HaGevurah, in the merit of the soul of our holy master, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. May his merits protect us. Amen!
3. Ner Shlishi – the third candle
I light this candle corresponding to the Sefirat HaTiferet, in the merit of the soul of our holy master, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. May his merits protect us. Amen!
4. Ner Revi'i – the fourth candle
I light this candle corresponding to the Sefirat HaNetzach, in the merit of the soul of our holy master, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. May his merits protect us. Amen!
5. Ner Chamishi – the fifth candle
I light this candle corresponding to the Sefirat HaHod, in the merit of the soul of our holy master, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. May his merits protect us. Amen!
6. Ner Shishi – the sixth candle
I light this candle corresponding to the Sefirat HaYesod, in the merit of the soul of our holy master, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. May his merits protect us. Amen!
7. Ner Shevi'i – the seventh candle
I light this candle corresponding to the Sefirat HaMalchut, in the merit of the soul of our holy master, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. May his merits protect us. Amen!
After all the candles have been lit, one may pray and ask the Almighty, from the depths of one's soul and heart, for any request, in the merit of our master, Rashbi.
May we be worthy of witnessing miracles through Divine mercy!
Amen ve-Amen!
