Jewish Psychosomatics — The Connection Between the Liver, Spleen, Heart, and Lungs and Spiritual Problems
The sages teach that the bitterness of Gehinnom is associated with the liver: "and just as leeches—the forces of evil—suck a person's blood, it is said of them: "hav, hav"—(give, give)" (Mishlei 30:15)
And the liver produces the bitterness of a deadly poison that blocks the blood vessels and approaches the holy part of the soul dwelling in the heart.
The forces of evil manifest themselves in the animal part of the soul—Nefesh—and dwell in the liver, gallbladder, and spleen.
And the bitterness of the gall is what incites the brain, acting as the prosecuting counsel against holiness.
The lungs, heart, and brain are intended for the elevated part of the soul—the spirit—Ruach, although negative traits also manifest there to some extent: pride and arrogance, which insinuate themselves into the heart from below.
Only the lungs are largely protected from evil. Through them, through their functioning, prophecy manifests itself in a person. They kindle the candle of a pure spiritual fire: "The soul of the L-rd is the (elevated) soul (neshamah) of man". (Mishlei 20:23)
This candle, this fire, is prophecy, and this fire is the opposite of the fire that appears in the liver and gall as a result of every expression of lust. That fire is truly the fire of Gehinnom, and it is up to a person to choose. (The Vilna Gaon on "Tikkunei Zohar")
It is stated in the most ancient book, "Sefer Yetzirah":
Three things that hate—liver, gall, and tongue. All forms of lust are associated with the liver.
And Esau said to Jacob: "Let me gulp down some of this red, this red"—because it is customary to drink blood and send it to all the organs.
The liver said to him: "because I have become weak without drink and food".
And in the gall, as is known, all forms of envy nest, as it is said: "Illness is gall," ("marah")—bitter—and therefore it is simply called illness, for it is an illness of the entire body.
Arrogance and pride are associated with the tongue.
With the tongue, people praise themselves and denigrate others; they also elevate themselves at another's expense by mocking that person.
And these are the three things of which it is said: "envy, lust, and the pursuit of honor remove a person from the world".(Avot 4:21)
"From the world"("min ha-olam")—from this world—refers to the World to Come. (The Vilna Gaon on "Sefer Yetzirah")
