Ben Ish Hai’s Prayer on Erev Rosh Chodesh
The prayer and order of study established by Rabbi Yosef Chaim—the Ben Ish Hai—may his merit protect us and all Israel.
On Erev Rosh Chodesh, recite the following for blessing and as a good omen:
Introduction
- “Lishuatekha kivity Adonai” (2 times)
“Le-furkanakh sabarti Adonai” (2 times)
“Ana Adonai hoshi’a na” (2 times)
“Ana Adonai hatzliḥa na” (2 times)
(I have hoped for Your salvation, O L-rd.
I have awaited Your deliverance.
Please, O L-rd, save us!
Please, O L-rd, grant success.)
- “Yisa berakhah me-et Adonai, u-tzedakah me-Elohei yisho.”
(He will receive blessing from G-d and righteousness from the G-d of his salvation.)
(He will be like a tree planted beside streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, whose leaves do not wither, and whatever he does will prosper.)
- “Lev tahor bera li Elohim, ve-ruaḥ nakhon ḥadesh be-kirbi.” (2 times)
(Create a pure heart within me, O G-d, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.)
(This Torah scroll shall not depart from your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, for then you will prosper in your ways and then you will succeed.)
- “Va-amartem koh la-chai: ve-atah shalom, u-veitekha shalom, ve-khol asher lekha shalom.” (3 times)
(And say to the living one: You are at peace, your household is at peace, and all that is yours is at peace.)
- “Ve-hayah mi-dei ḥodesh be-ḥodsho, u-mi-dei Shabbat be-Shabbato, yavo kol basar lehishtaḥavot lefanai, amar Adonai.”
(And it shall be that every month at its new moon and every Shabbat on its Shabbat, all flesh shall come to bow before Me, said the L-rd.)
(Along the stream, on both its banks, every kind of food-bearing tree will grow; its leaves will not wither, nor will its fruit fail. Each month it will produce new fruit, because its waters flow from the Sanctuary; its fruit will be for food and its leaves for healing.)
- “Va-ta’adi zahav va-kesef, u-malbushך sheש ve-meshi ve-rikmah, solet u-dvash va-shemen akhalt, va-tifi be-me’od me’od, va-titzleḥi li-melukhah.”
(You adorned yourself with gold and silver, and your clothing was fine linen, silk, and embroidered fabric; you ate fine flour, honey, and oil. You became exceedingly beautiful and attained royalty.)

Translation
May there be complete goodness at the beginning of the month.
May there be complete goodness on the holy day of the Moon.
May there be complete goodness on the day of the Kingdom.
May there be complete goodness on the day of the Queen, the Shekhinah.
May there be complete goodness on the day of the foundation of the House.
May there be complete goodness on the day of the revealed world.
The beginning of the month—you are most beloved and precious.
In you, the holy Malchut returns at the time of Atzilut.
In you, two kings use one crown and are called the two great luminaries.
In you, the blessing of the holy Matronita increases so that she may receive her blessings through her.
In you, the Shekhinah ascends, of whom it is said: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”
In you, there is extraordinary joy for the women of the holy nation.
In you, Israel partakes of a meal to pour out blessings upon the Shekhinah.
In you, the holy nation rejoices, while the evil maidservant remains in darkness.
In you, the fire of Gehinnom is quieted and has no power.
In you, Israel rejoices, for Israel is bound to the Moon, ascends to the higher Sun, unites in the place of light from the higher Sun, and cleaves to it, as it is written: “But you who cleave to the L-rd your G-d are alive, every one of you, today.”
In you, the Moon is purified to draw close to the Sun.
In you, the Moon is renewed, illuminated by the Sun in the joy of the light of Atik.
Of you it is written: “And it shall be that every month at its new moon and every Shabbat on its Shabbat.”
All ascend to one level. This unites with that in the joy of each with the other.
In you, the service of holiness takes place within holiness. The Moon is illuminated to unite with the Sun.
And concerning this it is written: “Thus said the L-rd: The gate of the inner court that faces east shall remain closed during the six working days, but on Shabbat and on the day of the new moon it shall be opened.”
It is opened on Shabbat and on the day of the new moon to nourish the sanctified world.
In you, the supernal rose opens to receive fragrances and spices, and to inherit souls and delights for the holy children.
In you, the soul of the tzadikim is bound with the spirit between the fragrances in the Garden of Eden on earth; from there it moves and joins with the spirit and with the soul bound in the bond of life.
It is refreshed and nourished by precious kinds from this side and from that side.
As it is written: “And the L-rd will guide you always.”
And concerning this it is written: “He will satisfy your soul in drought.”
One radiance is when it is bound with the spirit of the garden below.
The inner radiance comes from the radiance when they are bound with the soul above, in the bond of life.
In you, the holy nation rejoices and recites Hallel.
In you, they read from the Torah and add one to three.
Because the light of the Moon increases.
In you, the holy nation adds the prayer of Musaf.
In you, the Holy One, blessed be He, comes to watch over Israel, to look upon the dwelling that He has with them, which is His longing; and Israel, the holy nation, rejoices in you and says: “This is the day that the L-rd has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
