Ma'aseh HaNissim — Miracles of Eliyahu HaNavi and Elisha HaNavi
Eliyahu HaNavi

Ma'aseh HaNissim — Miracles of Eliyahu HaNavi and Elisha HaNavi

Maaseh HaNisim

Maaseh HaNisim is a listing of the 34 miracles performed by Eliyahu HaNavi and his disciple, Elisha HaNavi.

The Mekubalim teach that there is great power in reading these pesukim, drawing the influence of salvation and good fortune from the source dug by Eliyahu HaNavi and Elisha HaNavi—two great prophets about whom we are told of many more miracles than those performed by all the other prophets who served among the Jewish people.

There is a place for every miracle and salvation in this source dug by these two prophets.

Every salvation a person needs, in any area and in all its details, can be drawn to him by reading about the miracles that happened to them. When a person pictures in his soul the salvation he needs, he will find it among these miracles, thereby drawing upon himself a great influence from Heaven.

Our Sages related that before Eliyahu HaNavi ascended to Heaven in a storm, his disciple Elisha asked him to bless him so that he would be able to receive twice the spiritual strength that Eliyahu himself possessed.

Eliyahu answered him: “I cannot give you what you ask, because a person can give only what he possesses; what he does not possess, he cannot give” (meaning that he could not give another person twice as much strength as he himself had).

Elisha continued to insist firmly on his request. Eliyahu answered him:

“If you see me when I ascend to Heaven in a storm, you will be able to receive what you ask and merit twice the strength that I possess.”

In explanation of these words, the book of the prophet Yeshayahu states (30:20): “And your eyes shall see your teacher.”

That is, when a person sees his teacher and his eyes are constantly directed toward him, the teacher also—even when he is not with him—will merit an influence that is doubled and redoubled.

If so, we can understand the miracles that occurred to Eliyahu and Elisha, and delve into how this influence came about and how the order of Creation was transformed. When we also place before our eyes and imagine the troubles and problems we face within those miracles and salvations, we will receive a twofold salvation, joy, and great help from Heaven.

The Miracles of Eliyahu HaNavi (13 miracles)

1. Eliyahu HaNavi is sustained by ravens

(Melachim I 17:4–6)

“You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there.” He went and did according to the word of the L-rd; he went and lived by the Brook of Kerith, which is before the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

2. The miracle of the jar of flour and the flask of oil

(Melachim I 17:14–16)

“For thus says the L-rd, the G-d of Israel: The jar of flour shall not be depleted, and the flask of oil shall not lack, until the day the L-rd gives rain upon the earth.” She went and did as Eliyahu had said; and she, he, and her household ate for many days. The jar of flour was not depleted, and the flask of oil did not lack, according to the word of the L-rd that He spoke through Eliyahu.

3. Reviving the widow’s son

(Melachim I 17:19–21)

He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him from her bosom, carried him up to the upper chamber where he lived, and laid him on his bed. He called to the L-rd and said: “O L-rd my G-d, have You also brought harm upon the widow with whom I dwell, by causing her son to die?” He stretched himself over the child three times, called to the L-rd, and said: “O L-rd my G-d, please let this child’s soul return to him.”

4. Fire descending from Heaven and consuming the offerings and the water

(Melachim I 18:31–39)

Va-yikach Eliyahu shteim esreh avanim ke-mispar shivtei vnei Yaakov asher hayah dvar Adonai eilav lemor: Yisrael yihyeh shemekha. Va-yivneh et ha-avanim mizbeach be-Shem Adonai va-yaas tealah ke-veit satayim zera saviv la-mizbeach. Va-yaarokh et ha-etzim va-yenatach et ha-par va-yasem al ha-etzim. Va-yomer: Milu arbaah kadim mayim ve-yitzku al ha-olah ve-al ha-etzim. Va-yomer: Shenu, va-yishnu. Va-yomer: Shaleshu, va-yeshaleshu. Va-yelechu ha-mayim saviv la-mizbeach ve-gam et ha-tealah milei mayim. Va-yehi ba-alot ha-Mincha va-yigash Eliyahu HaNavi va-yomar: Adonai Elohei Avraham, Yitzchak ve-Yisrael, ha-yom yivada ki Atah Elohim be-Yisrael va-ani avdekha u-vi-dvarekha asiti et kol ha-devarim ha-eleh. Va-yar kol ha-am va-yiplu al peneihem va-yomru: Adonai hu ha-Elohim, Adonai hu ha-Elohim.

Eliyahu took twelve stones, corresponding to the twelve tribes of the sons of Yaakov, to whom the word of the L-rd had come, saying: “Israel shall be your name.” He built an altar from the stones in the name of the L-rd, and made a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seed. He arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and placed it on the wood. He said: “Fill four jars with water and pour it over the offering and the wood.” Then he said: “Do it a second time,” and they did so. He said: “Do it a third time,” and they did so a third time. The water flowed around the altar, and he also filled the trench with water. At the time of the Mincha offering, Eliyahu the prophet approached and said: “O L-rd, G-d of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Israel, let it be known today that You are G-d in Israel, that I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Answer me, O L-rd, answer me, so that this people may know that You, O L-rd, are G-d, and that You have turned their hearts back.” Then the fire of the L-rd fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell on their faces and said: “The L-rd—He is G-d! The L-rd—He is G-d!”

5. Rain descending after prayer

(Melachim I 18:41–45)

Va-yomer Eliyahu le-Achav: Aleh, ekhol u-shetei, ki kol hamon ha-geshem. Va-yaaleh Achav le-ekhol ve-lishtot, ve-Eliyahu alah el rosh ha-Karmel va-yigar artzah va-yasem panav bein birkav. Va-yomer el naaro: Aleh na habet derekh yam. Va-yaal va-yabet va-yomer: Ein meumah. Va-yomer: Shuv sheva peamim. Va-yehi ba-sheviit va-yomer: Hinei av ketanah ke-khaf ish olah mi-yam.

Eliyahu said to Achav: “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a great rain.” Achav went up to eat and drink, while Eliyahu went up to the top of Carmel. He crouched down to the ground and placed his face between his knees. He said to his attendant: “Go up, please, and look toward the sea.” He went up, looked, and said: “There is nothing.” He said: “Go back seven times.” On the seventh time he said: “Behold, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, is rising from the sea.” He said: “Go up, tell Achav: Harness your chariot and go down, so that the rain does not delay you.”

6. Sustenance from an angel, giving him the strength to travel forty days and forty nights without food or drink

(Melachim I 19:5–8)

Va-yishkav va-yishan takhat rotem ekhad. Ve-hinei zeh malakh nogea bo, va-yomer lo: Kum, ekhol. Va-yabet ve-hinei me-raashotav ugat retzafim ve-tsapachat mayim, va-yokhal va-yeshet, va-yashov va-yishkav. Va-yashov malakh Adonai shenit va-yiga bo, va-yomer: Kum, ekhol, ki rav mimkha ha-derekh. Va-yakom va-yokhal va-yishteh va-yelekh be-koakh ha-akhilah ha-hi arbaim yom ve-arbaim laylah ad Har HaElohim Khorev.

He lay down and slept beneath a broom tree. Suddenly, an angel touched him and said: “Arise and eat.” He looked, and behold, at his head was a cake baked on coals and a flask of water. He ate and drank and lay down again. The angel of the L-rd returned a second time, touched him, and said: “Arise and eat, for the journey is too far for you.” He arose, ate and drank, and traveled by the strength of that meal for forty days and forty nights, to Horeb, the mountain of G-d.

7. Ha-Shem reveals Himself to Eliyahu

(Melachim I 19:9, 11–13)

Va-yavo sham el ha-mearah va-yalen sham ve-hinei dvar Adonai eilav va-yomer lo: Mah lekha poh, Eliyahu? Va-yomer: Tzei ve-amadta va-har lifnei Adonai. Ve-hinei Adonai over, ve-ruakh gedolah ve-khazak mefarek harim u-meshaber selaim lifnei Adonai; lo va-ruakh Adonai. Ve-akhar ha-ruakh raash; lo va-raash Adonai. Ve-akhar ha-raash esh; lo va-esh Adonai. Ve-akhar ha-esh kol demamah dakah. Va-yehi ki-shmoa Eliyahu va-yalet panav be-adarto va-yetzei va-yaamod petakh ha-me arah ve-hinei eilav kol. Va-yomer: Mah lekha poh, Eliyahu?

He entered the cave and spent the night there. And behold, the word of the L-rd came to him, and He said to him: “What are you doing here, Eliyahu?” He said: “Go out and stand on the mountain before the L-rd.” And behold, the L-rd passed by. A great and mighty wind tore through the mountains and shattered rocks before the L-rd; “the L-rd was not in the wind.” After the wind came an earthquake; “the L-rd was not in the earthquake.” After the earthquake came a fire; “the L-rd was not in the fire.” After the fire came a still, small voice. When Eliyahu heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, went out, and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said: “What are you doing here, Eliyahu?”

8. Victory over Aram

(Melachim I 20:13, 21)

Ve-hinei navi ekhad nigash el Achav, melekh Yisrael. Va-yomer: Koh amar Adonai: Ha-reita et kol he-hamon ha-gadol ha-zeh? Hineni noteno ve-yadkha ha-yom, ve-yadata ki Ani Adonai. Va-yetzei melekh Yisrael va-yakh et ha-sus ve-et ha-rekhev ve-yakeh va-Aram makah gedolah.

A prophet approached Achav, king of Israel, and said: “Thus says the L-rd: Have you seen this entire great multitude? Behold, I shall deliver it into your hand today, and you shall know that I am the L-rd.” The king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, inflicting a great defeat on Aram.

9. The prophecy concerning Achav and its fulfillment

(Melachim I 21:17–19; 22:37–38)

Va-yehi dvar Adonai el Eliyahu ha-Tishbi lemor: Kum, red likrat Achav, melekh Yisrael, asher be-Shomron. Hinei be-kerem Navot, asher yarad sham le-rishto. Ve-dibarta eilav lemor: Koh amar Adonai: Ha-ratzakhta ve-gam yarashta? Ve-dibarta eilav lemor: Koh amar Adonai: Bi-mekom asher lakeku ha-klavim et dam Navot, yaloku ha-klavim et damekha gam atah. Va-yamot ha-melekh va-yavo Shomron va-yikberu et ha-melekh be-Shomron. Va-yishtof et ha-rekhev al berekhat Shomron va-yaloku ha-klavim et damo ve-ha-zonot rakhatzu ki-dvar Adonai asher diber.

The word of the L-rd came to Eliyahu the Tishbite, saying: “Arise, go down to meet Achav, king of Israel, who is in Shomron. Behold, he is in the vineyard of Navot, where he has gone to take possession of it. Speak to him, saying: ‘Thus says the L-rd: Have you murdered and also taken possession?’ And speak to him, saying: ‘Thus says the L-rd: In the place where the dogs licked the blood of Navot, the dogs shall lick your blood as well.’” The king died, and he was brought to Shomron, and they buried the king in Shomron. They washed the chariot at the pool of Shomron, and the dogs licked up his blood, and the prostitutes bathed there, according to the word of the L-rd that He had spoken.

10. The prophecy concerning Achazyahu and its fulfillment

(Melachim II 1:3–4, 17)

U-malakh Adonai diber el Eliyahu ha-Tishbi: Kum, aleh likrat malakhei melekh Shomron ve-daber aleihem: Ha-mibli ein Elohim be-Yisrael, atem holkhim lidrosh be-Va'al Zevuv elohei Ekron? Ve-lakhen koh amar Adonai: Ha-mitah asher alita sham lo tereid mimenah, ki mot tamut. Va-yelekh Eliyahu.

Va-yamot ki-dvar Adonai asher diber Eliyahu va-yimlokh Yehoram takhtav bi-shnat shtayim li-Yehoram ben Yehoshafat, melekh Yehudah, ki lo hayah lo ben.

The angel of the L-rd said to Eliyahu the Tishbite: “Arise and go up to meet the messengers of the king of Shomron, and say to them: Is it because there is no G-d in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zevuv, the god of Ekron? Therefore, thus says the L-rd: You shall not come down from the bed upon which you have ascended; you shall surely die.” And Eliyahu went.

He died according to the word of the L-rd that Eliyahu had spoken, and Yehoram became king in his place, in the second year of Yehoram son of Yehoshafat, king of Yehudah, because he had no son.

11. The destruction of the captain of fifty by fire from Heaven

(Melachim II 1:10)

Va-yaaneh Eliyahu va-yedaber el sar ha-hamishim: Ve-im ish Elohim ani, teired esh min ha-shamayim ve-tokhal etkha ve-et khamishekha. Va-teired esh min ha-shamayim va-tokhal oto ve-et khamishav.

Eliyahu answered and said to the captain of fifty: “If I am a man of G-d, let fire descend from Heaven and consume you and your fifty men.” Fire descended from Heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.

12. Eliyahu divides the Jordan

(Melachim II 2:8)

Va-yikach Eliyahu et adarto va-yiglom va-yakeh et ha-mayim va-yeikhatzu henah va-henah va-yaavru sheneihem be-kharavah.

Eliyahu took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water. It divided to one side and the other, and the two of them crossed on dry ground.

13. Eliyahu is taken up to Heaven in a whirlwind

(Melachim II 2:11)

Va-yehi hemah holkhim halokh ve-daber ve-hinei rekhev esh ve-susei esh va-yafridu bein sheneihem va-yaal Eliyahu ba-searah ha-shamayim.

And it came to pass, as they continued walking and talking, that behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated them from one another; and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind to heaven.

The Miracles of Elisha HaNavi (21 Miracles)

14. The Splitting of the Jordan by Elisha

(II Kings 2:14)

He took Elijah’s mantle, which had fallen from him, struck the water with it, and said: “Where is the L-rd, the G-d of Elijah?” He struck the water, and it split to one side and the other, and Elisha crossed over.

15. Sweetening the Water with Salt

(II Kings 2:19–22)

Va-yomru anshei ha-ir el Elisha: “Hineh na moshav ha-ir tov ka-asher adoni ro'eh, ve-ha-mayim ra'im ve-ha-aretz meshakelet.” Omer: “Kechu li tzlohit chadashah ve-simu sham melach,” va-yikchu elav. Va-yetze el motza ha-mayim va-yashlech sham melach. Va-yomer: “Ko amar Adonai: ripiti la-mayim ha-eleh; lo yihyeh misham od mavet u-meshakelet.” Va-yerafu ha-mayim ad ha-yom ha-zeh ki-dvar Elisha asher diber.

The men of the city said to Elisha: “Behold, the location of this city is good, as my lord sees, but the water is bad and the land causes death.” He said: “Bring me a new flask and put salt in it.” And they brought it to him. He went out to the spring of the water, cast salt there, and said: “So says the L-rd: ‘I have healed these waters; there shall be no more death or bereavement from them.’” And the waters were healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha that he spoke.

16. The Miracle of the Bears and the Forest

(II Kings 2:23–24)

Va-ya'al misham Beit El. Ve-hu oleh va-derech u-ne'arim ketanim yatzu min ha-ir va-yitkal'su vo, va-yomru lo: “Aleh kere'ach, aleh kere'ach.” Va-yifen acharav va-yir'em va-yekal'lem be-Shem Adonai va-tetze'nah shtayim dubim min ha-ya'ar va-tevaka'nah mehem arba'im u-shnei yeladim.

He went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up along the road, young boys came out of the city and mocked him, saying: “Go up, bald one! Go up, bald one!” He turned behind him, saw them, and cursed them in the name of the L-rd. Two bears emerged from the forest and tore apart forty-two boys from among them.

17. Filling the Stream Without Rain

(II Kings 3:16, 17, and 20)

Va-yomer: “Ko amar Adonai: asu ha-nachal ha-zeh gevim gevim. Ki ko amar Adonai: lo tir'u ruach ve-lo tir'u geshem, ve-ha-nachal ha-hu yimale mayim u-shtitem atem u-mikneichem u-vehemtechem.” Va-yehi va-boker ka'alot ha-Mincha, ve-hineh mayim ba'im mi-derech Edom va-timale ha-aretz et ha-mayim.

And he said: “So says the L-rd: ‘Make this stream full of pits,’ for so says the L-rd: ‘You shall see neither wind nor rain, yet this stream shall be filled with water, and you shall drink, you, your herds, and your livestock.’” And it came to pass in the morning, when the Mincha offering was brought, that water came by way of Edom, and the land was filled with water.

18. Victory over Moab

(II Kings 3:18–19 and 24–26)

Ve-nakal zot be-einei Adonai ve-natan et Moav be-yedchem. Ve-hikitem kol ir mivtzar ve-chol ir mivchor ve-chol etz tov tapilu ve-chol ma'yenei mayim tistomu ve-chol ha-chelkah ha-tovah tach'ihu ba-avanim. Va-yar melech Moav ki chazak mimenu ha-milchamah va-yikach oto shiva me'ot ish sholef cherev le-havkia el melech Edom ve-lo yacholu.

But this is an easy thing in the eyes of the L-rd; He will deliver Moab into your hands. You shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, cut down every good tree, stop up every spring of water, and ruin every good plot with stones. They came to the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rose and struck the Moabites, who fled before them. They continued striking Moab. They demolished the cities, and every good plot they filled with stones, each man casting his stone; they stopped up every spring of water and cut down every good tree, until only Kir-hareseth remained, with its stones. The slingers surrounded it and destroyed it. The king of Moab saw that the battle was too strong for him, so he took seven hundred sword-bearing men to break through to the king of Edom, but they could not.

19. The Miracle of the Multiplication of Oil

(II Kings 4:1–7)

Va-yomer: “Lechi michri et ha-shemen ve-shalmi et nishech, ve-at u-vanaich tichyi ba-notar.”

A certain woman, one of the wives of the sons of the prophets, cried out to Elisha, saying: “Your servant, my husband, has died. You know that your servant feared the L-rd, and now the creditor has come to take my two children as slaves.” Elisha said to her: “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She said: “Your handmaid has nothing in the house except a flask of oil.” He said: “Go and borrow vessels for yourself from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. Then go in, shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour into all these vessels, setting aside each full one.” She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought her the vessels, and she poured. When the vessels were full, she said to her son: “Bring me another vessel.” He said: “There are no more vessels,” and the oil stopped flowing. She came and told the man of G-d, and he said: “Go, sell the oil, pay your debt, and live with your sons on what remains.”

20. The Shunamite Woman Is Granted a Son

(II Kings 4:15–17)

Va-yomer: “Kera lah,” va-yikra lah va-ta'amod ba-petach. Va-yomer: “La-mo'ed ha-zeh ka-et chayah at choveqet ben.” Va-tomer: “Al adoni, ish ha-Elohim, al techazev be-shifchatecha.” Va-tahar ha-ishah va-teled ben la-mo'ed ha-zeh ka-et chayah asher diber eleha Elisha.

He said: “Call her.” He called her, and she stood at the entrance. He said: “At this time next year, you will be embracing a son.” She said: “No, my lord, man of G-d, do not disappoint your handmaid.” The woman conceived and gave birth to a son at that time the following year, as Elisha had told her.

21. Bringing the Child Back to Life

(II Kings 4:32–35)

Elisha entered the house, and behold, the child was dead, lying on his bed. He entered, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the L-rd. He went up and lay upon the child, placing his mouth upon the child’s mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his palms upon his palms; he stretched himself over him, and the child’s flesh grew warm. He returned and walked through the house, once there and once back, then went up and stretched himself over him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

22. Healing the Poison in the Pot

(II Kings 4:38–41)

Va-yomer: “Tzok la-am ve-yochlu,” ve-lo hayah davar ra ba-sir.

Elisha returned to Gilgal. There was a famine in the land, and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him. He said to his attendant: “Set the large pot on the fire and cook a stew for the sons of the prophets.” One of them went out into the field to gather greens, found a wild vine, and gathered a lapful of wild gourds. He came and sliced them into the stew, though they did not know what they were. They poured it out for the men to eat, but as they ate the stew, they cried out: “There is death in the pot, man of G-d!” They could not eat it. He said: “Bring some flour.” He cast it into the pot and said: “Serve it to the people so that they may eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.

23. Blessing and Multiplication of Food

(II Kings 4:42–44)

A man came from Baal-shalishah and brought the man of G-d bread made from the first fruits: twenty barley loaves and fresh grain in his sack. He said: “Give it to the people and let them eat.” His attendant said: “How can I set this before a hundred men?” He said: “Give it to the people and let them eat, for so says the L-rd: ‘They shall eat and have some left.’” He placed it before them, and they ate and had some left, according to the word of the L-rd.

24. Naaman’s Healing from Leprosy

(II Kings 5:10 and 14)

Va-yishlach elav Elisha malach lemor: “Halokh ve-rachatzta sheva pe'amim ba-Yarden ve-yashov besar'cha lecha u-tehar.” Va-yered va-yitbol ba-Yarden sheva pe'amim ki-dvar ish ha-Elohim va-yashov besaro ki-vesar na'ar katan va-yit'har.

Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying: “Go and bathe seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be pure.” He went down and immersed himself in the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of G-d; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young child, and he became pure.

25. Gehazi’s Leprosy

(II Kings 5:26–27)

Va-yomer elav: “Lo libi halach ka-asher hafach ish me-al merkavto likratecha: ha-et lakachat et ha-kesef ve-lakachat begadim ve-zeitim u-keramim ve-tzon u-vakar va-avadim u-shefachot? Ve-tzara'at Naaman tidbak becha u-ve-zar'acha le-olam.” Va-yetze milfanav metzora ka-sheleg.

He said to him: “Did not my heart go with you when that man turned from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take silver and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and cattle, male and female servants? May Naaman’s leprosy cling to you and to your descendants forever.” And he went out from his presence leprous, white as snow.

26. Raising the Iron from the Jordan

(II Kings 6:5–7)

Va-yehi ha-echad mapil ha-korah ve-et ha-barzel nafal el ha-mayim va-yitz'ak va-yomar: “Aha, adoni, ve-hu sha'ul.” Va-yomer ish ha-Elohim: “Anah nafal?” Va-yar'ehu et ha-makom. Va-yiktzav etz va-yashlech shamah va-yatzef ha-barzel. Va-yomer: “Harem lach.” Va-yishlach yado va-yikachehu.

As one of them was felling a beam, the iron fell into the water. He cried out: “Alas, my master, for it was borrowed!” The man of G-d said: “Where did it fall?” He showed him the place. He cut a piece of wood, threw it there, and the iron floated. He said: “Take it.” The man reached out his hand and took it.

27. Seeing the Location of the Aramean Camp

(II Kings 6:8–9)

U-melech Aram hayah nilcham be-Yisrael va-yiva'atz el avadav lemor: “El makom peloni almoni tanchoti.” Va-yishlach ish ha-Elohim el melech Yisrael lemor: “Hishamer me-avor ha-makom ha-zeh, ki sham Aram nechitim.”

The king of Aram was waging war against Israel and consulted with his servants, saying: “At such-and-such a place shall be my camp.” The man of G-d sent word to the king of Israel: “Beware of passing through that place, for the Arameans are descending there.”

28. Opening the Eyes of the Attendant

(II Kings 7:15–17)

Va-yashkem mesharet ish ha-Elohim lakum va-yetze ve-hineh chayil sovev et ha-ir ve-sus va-rechev. Va-yomer na'aro elav: “Aha, adoni, eichah na'aseh?” Va-yomer: “Al tira, ki rabim asher itanu me-asher otam.” Va-yitpalel Elisha va-yomar: “Adonai, pekach na et einav ve-yireh.” Va-yifkach Adonai et einei ha-na'ar va-yar ve-hineh ha-har male susim ve-rechev esh sevivot Elisha.

And the servant of the man of G-d rose early and went out, and behold, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master, what shall we do?” And he said, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed and said, “O L-rd! Please open his eyes, and let him see.” And the L-rd opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw: the mountain was full of horses and fiery chariots surrounding Elisha.

29. The Arameans Struck with Blindness

(2 Kings 6:18)

Va-yeredu elav va-yitpalel Elisha el Adonai va-yomar: “Ach na et ha-goy ha-zeh ba-sanverim.” Va-yakem ba-sanverim ki-dvar Elisha.

And they descended to him—the Arameans. Elisha prayed to the L-rd and said, “Please strike these people with blindness.” And He struck them with blindness, according to Elisha’s word.

30. Prophetic Vision of the King’s Plot to Send an Assassin

(2 Kings 6:32–33)

Ve-Elisha yoshev be-veito ve-ha-zekenim yoshvim ito. Va-yishlach ish milfanav. Be-terem yavo ha-malach elav ve-hu amar el ha-zekenim: “Ha-re'item ki shalach ben ha-meratze'ach ha-zeh le-hasir et roshi? Re'u ke-vo ha-malach, sigru ha-delet u-lechatztem oto ba-delet. Ha-lo kol raglei adonav acharav.” Odenu medaber imam ve-hineh ha-malach yored elav va-yomer: “Hineh zot ha-ra'ah me-et Adonai; mah ochil la-Adonai od?”

Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king had sent a man on his behalf. Before the messenger arrived, he said to the elders, “Do you see that this son of a murderer has sent someone to take my head? When the messenger comes, shut the door and hold him back with it. Is that not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?” He was still speaking with them when, behold, the messenger came down to him. And he said, “Behold, this calamity is from the L-rd! Why should I continue to hope in the L-rd?”

31. Prophecy of a Drop in the Price of Produce

(2 Kings 7:1 and 16)

Va-yomer Elisha: “Shim'u devar Adonai.

And Elisha said, “Hear the word of the L-rd! Thus said the L-rd: Tomorrow at this time, a seah of fine flour will sell for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Shomron.” And the people went out and plundered the camp of Aram; and a seah of fine flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the L-rd.

32. Prophecy to the King’s Advisor and Its Fulfillment

(2 Kings 7:2 and 17)

Va-ya'an ha-shalish asher la-melech nishan al yado et ish ha-Elohim va-yomar: “Hineh Adonai oseh arubot ba-shamayim, ayihyeh ha-davar ha-zeh?” Va-yomer: “Hinecha ro'eh be-einecha u-mi-sham lo tochal.” Ve-ha-melech hifkid et ha-shalish asher nishan al yado al ha-sha'ar va-yirmesuhu ha-am ba-sha'ar va-yamot ka-asher diber ish ha-Elohim asher diber be-redet ha-melech elav.

And the officer upon whose arm the king leaned answered the man of G-d and said, “Even if the L-rd were to make windows in heaven, could this come to pass?” And he said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat of it.” And the king appointed that officer upon whose arm he leaned over the gate; and the people trampled him at the gate, and he died, as the man of G-d had said, when the king came down to him.

33. The Prophecy Concerning Ben-Hadad and Its Fulfillment

(2 Kings 8:10 and 15)

Va-yomer elav Elisha: “Lech emor lo: ‘Chayoh tichy eh,’ ve-hirani Adonai ki mot yamut.” Va-yehi mi-mochorat va-yikach ha-machber va-yitbol ba-mayim va-yifros al panav va-yamot va-yimloch Chazael tachtav.

And Elisha said to him, “Go, say to him, ‘You will recover.’ But the L-rd has shown me that he will surely die.” And it came to pass on the following day that he took the cover, dipped it in water, and spread it over his face; and he died. And Chazael became king in his place.

34. A Dead Man Revived by the Bones of Elisha

(2 Kings 13:20–21)

Va-yamot Elisha va-yikberuhu. U-gedudei Moav yavo'u va-aretz ba shanah. Va-yehi hem koverim ish ve-hineh ra'u et ha-gedud va-yashlichu et ha-ish be-kever Elisha, va-yelech va-yiga ha-ish be-atzmot Elisha va-yechi va-yakom al raglav.

And Elisha died, and they buried him. And bands of Moabites would enter the land at the beginning of the year. And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that they saw the band, and they cast the man into Elisha’s grave. When the man fell, he touched Elisha’s bones, and he came to life and stood on his feet.
