Holy Books to Have in the Home and Their Segulot
1. Sefer Tehillim – protection from evil spirits and all kinds of harm in the home
It is stated in the book “Pekudat Eliezer” by Rabbi Eliezer Lau that it was customary for a person to take the holy book “Sefer Tehillim” when there was concern about mazikin (harmful spirits).
2. Sefer Raziel HaMalach- To protect the home from fires;
- To ease childbirth for a woman in labor.
3. The Books of the RambamThe sefer “Ta'amei HaMinhagim” (p. 319) mentions this segulah for salvation. It is said in the name of Rav Mendel of Kozhnitz that having the Rambam’s books in the home is a segulah for parnassah and yirat Shamayim.
4. “Shivrei Luchot” (Fragments of the Tablets) by Rabbi Yehiel Michel of NemirovThe sefer “Shaar HaMesaper” (The Storyteller’s Gate) says that in order to save the home from every misfortune and illness, and to attract success, blessings, wealth, and greatness, one should acquire “Shivrei Luchot.”
5. Sefer “Tiferet Yisrael” - Rav Yisrael Charif 6. “Sefer HaMiddot” by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov – a segulah for all that is good, including parnassah.
7. A Chumash with the “Heichal HaBerachah” commentaries (The Palace of Blessing).
This book was dedicated to the Jews of Hungary.
8. Sefer “Imrei Yosef” - a segulah for blessing in the home and success in one’s endeavors. 9. A siddur - the segulah of the Chatam Sofer, who transmitted it from his father-in-law, who received it from his father: in order for the Shabbat candles to burn well, one should place a siddur in front of them. 10. Holy Books Under the PillowWhen Rav Chaim Kanievsky was asked whether a woman in labor may place the holy book Raziel HaMalach under her pillow, he answered that she may not, explaining that this would show disrespect for holy books.
Nevi'im (Prophets) – Segulot of the 12 Books of Nevi'im Corresponding to the 12 Months of the Year
There is a tradition that the 12 months of the year are protected by specific sefarim (books) of the 12 Minor Prophets.
1. Tishrei – the 1st book, the prophet Hosea (a segulah – to carry it for teshuvah); 2. Cheshvan - the 2nd book – the prophet Joel (for well-being in spiritual and material matters); 3. Kislev - the 3rd book, the prophet Amos (for love between a man and a woman and with other people); 4. Tevet – the 4th book – the prophet Obadiah (for attracting holiness); 5. Shevat – the 5th book - the prophet Jonah (for teshuvah and to silence one’s enemies); 6. Adar – the 6th book - the prophet Micah (for wealth and parnassah); 7. Nisan – the 7th book – the prophet Nahum (for deliverance from troubles and for consolation); 8. Iyar – the 8th book - the prophet Habakkuk (for wisdom and understanding); 9. Sivan – the 9th book – the prophet Zephaniah (helps rectify the past so that it will not affect the future); 10. Tammuz – the 10th book – the prophet Haggai (for Heavenly assistance in a person’s affairs); 11. Av – the 11th book – the prophet Zechariah (for the rebuilding of the Temple and the arrival of the Geulah); 12. Elul – the 12th book - the prophet Malachi (for honoring one’s parents and for teshuvah).
