Seder Melaveh Malkah of the Mekubal Rabbi Mordechai Sharabi

Seder Melaveh Malkah of the Mekubal Rabbi Mordechai Sharabi

One Motzaei Shabbat after Chanukah, I was invited to a Melaveh Malkah at the home of the mother of Gaon Yaniv Assuri—Rabbanit Ora Assuri. To say that I felt as though I had entered a fairy tale would be an understatement. This Kabbalistic Seder Melaveh Malkah, following the Yemenite tradition, has brought so many people yeshuot that many who have heard of it dream of attending at least once. People come to it on Motzaei Shabbat from all over the country—from Jerusalem, Netanya, Ashdod, and elsewhere. Around a long table, approximately forty ordinary Jewish women gathered so that, led by Rabbanit Ora, they could conduct the Seder Melaveh Malkah as taught by the Mekubal Rabbi Mordechai Sharabi. First, they lit three candles on an antique elongated tray—corresponding to the rashei tevot (initial letters) of the name Adam—for Eliyahu HaNavi, David HaMelech, and Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes, and a fourth candle for the Baal Shem Tov. The Seder contains 13 prayers. After each prayer, the participant who recited it lights another candle, making a total of 17 candles, corresponding in gematria to the word “tov” (good). At the beginning of each prayer, the phrase “Eliyahu HaNavi, zachur le-tov” is recited seven times, followed immediately by a kavanah (to be contemplated, not pronounced) on the Holy Name of HaShem—אגלא.   Before the prayers: 1. Prepare a beautiful tray for the candles; 2. Prepare 17 small tablet candles; 3. Light three candles—corresponding to the rashei tevot (initial letters) of the name Adam—for Eliyahu HaNavi, David HaMelech, and Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes, and a fourth for the Baal Shem Tov; 4. Light one candle after each prayer.   1. The prayer of Eliyahu HaNavi from the book “Derech Yesharah” Be-Shem Ado-nai Elo-him, Elo-hei ma’arachot Yisrael, baruch Shem kevod malchuto le-olam va-ed. Translation: In the Name of the L-rd, G-d of the hosts of Israel, blessed is the Name of the glory of His kingdom forever and ever. Your Name and Your sovereignty are exalted above every blessing and praise, for Your Name is in You and You are in Your Name. At Your Name, hosts of fire tremble and glorify Your Name, though they do not behold it. At Your Name, the sea and all its breakers and waves retreat, glorifying Your Name. When You look upon the earth, it trembles, and its foundations flourish in fear of Your Name. All the inhabitants of the higher realms tremble and are afraid before You. The earth and its inhabitants, the netherworld, the wilderness, and the valley of the shadow of death weaken at Your Name. The Garden of Eden and all its pious inhabitants sing to Your Name, and every soul with the breath of life in its nostrils glorifies Your Name with pleasant speech. So too do I, (say your name), Your servant, son or daughter of Your maidservant, (say your mother’s name), dust and ashes, a maggot and a worm, a passing shadow, a fading flower. We come to prostrate ourselves in prayer before Your Throne of Glory, that You may answer us and inscribe us in the book of good, long, and perfected life, this year and every year, together with the righteous and pious. Place my portion with them in the Garden of Eden, in this world and in the World to Come. Grant us, our descendants, and our descendants’ descendants Your goodness, blessings, and life until the end of all generations. Improve and bless our paths and all the work of our hands, and open for us the gates of mercy, livelihood, and prosperity. Grant us good, long, and perfected lives, a good heart, and a good inclination. Lead us on the path of uprightness and guard our going out and coming in from now and forever. Save us today and every day from every misfortune, from every impure spirit at sea and on land, from fire and conflagration, sword and arrows, every weapon, drowning, every loss, pursuit, and capture, and everything that frightens and makes our hearts tremble. Increase and bestow upon us grace and kindness before You and before all who see us, for You are close to all who call upon You and seek You. We call upon You, O L-rd; answer us quickly and save us, so that we may speak of You and testify about You before kings without being ashamed. Fulfill our requests and pleas with mercy, and fulfill all the heart’s desires of Your servants and those who fear You for good. Guide us with good and successful counsel, and do what is good in our eyes. Do this for the sake of Your Name, for the sake of Your right hand, for the sake of Your Torah, and for the sake of Your holiness. For the sake of rescuing those You love, extend Your right hand and answer me. May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart find favor before You, O L-rd, my Rock and Redeemer. I ask of you that your merits be found and invoked on our behalf, so that we may be saved from every trouble and distress, every fear, the Satan, the evil inclination, evil speech, evil thoughts, misfortune, every evil thing, wicked people, inflammatory words, baseless hatred, and every evil deed. May lying lips that speak evil against us near or far be silenced. May all who come against us to cause us distress be frightened and terrified and fall before us according to our will; because of fear and dread of You, terror and fear shall fall upon them, and at the greatness of Your arm they shall become still as stone. Those who speak evil against our souls and curse us—may they do so, while You bless us. Be constantly present with us in our time of trouble—in the city and in the field, by day and by night, in settled places and in the wilderness, at sea and on land, when we lie down and when we rise. Save us from the counsel of the nations and from the corruption of the world. Amen, Netzach, Selah, Va’ed. [Light 1 candle] 11. Translation: Recite 7 times: “Eliyahu HaNavi, may he be remembered for good”! (kavanah on the Name Agla—אגלא). I ask of you that your merits be found and invoked on our behalf, to thwart at every time and hour the counsel of our enemies, those who hate us, and all their helpers who advise evil against us—what they have thought, what they think, and what they will think. May they and no other person have the time, place, or authority to bring evil upon us in this world, whether in thought, speech, deed, or any other way; may their actions be nullified. May all their wisdom be swallowed up, their schemes return upon their own heads, and may they be subdued before us. May they have no power to harm or frighten us. Strike them with blindness, madness, confusion, and bewilderment of heart. Nullify their thoughts, frustrate their counsel, and confuse their understanding. They may curse, but You shall bless us. Through the merit of Eliyahu and the merit of Chagai, Zecharyah, Malachi, and the prophetess Chuldah, may their merits protect us. Amen. Amen, Netzach, Selah, Va’ed. [Light 1 candle]   12. Translation: Recite 7 times: “Eliyahu HaNavi, may he be remembered for good”! (kavanah on the Name Agla—אגלא). I ask of you that your merits be found and invoked on our behalf, so that the hearts and wills of all created beings be brought and directed toward our will, and that they think, do, and say whatever we desire. May our wishes not grow old or be delayed, and may all their actions, thoughts, and words serve to fulfill our wishes. Whatever our will desires, may their will desire as well. May it be pleasing, sweet, beloved, desired, and accepted, so that our wishes and desires may be fulfilled. May they be removed from every matter and counsel opposed to us, and may they neither harm us nor speak or think evil of us through anything opposed to us. May great and small honor and exalt us for our good and merit. If there is anyone thinking against us, may he perish, be concealed, not appear, and not come near. Raise up our wishes and our will so that our plans may be fulfilled; hear our prayers in the highest heavens and grant our requests and petitions for the service of our Creator. Amen, Netzach, Selah, Va’ed. [Light 1 candle]   13. A general prayer for success, livelihood, protection, and other areas of blessing in life [Recite 7 times] “Eliyahu HaNavi, zachur le-tov”! I ask of you that your merits be found and invoked on our behalf, to exalt and elevate us, support and guide us, carry and heal us, restore our souls, lead us on the straight path, bring us closer to the service of the Blessed Name, and grant success to our paths and the work of our hands. Purify and sanctify us, save and protect us from our enemies and those who hate us, grant us honor and an honorable livelihood, and preserve our lives for the service of the Blessed Name. Guard and guide us on the straight path and in the paths of integrity—the mitzvot, Torah, statutes, and laws. Straighten our thoughts, speech, and deeds for good and for the service of the Blessed Name. May we constantly perform mitzvot and good deeds, engage throughout our lives in matters beneficial to our souls, and continually contemplate Torah, good deeds, and acts of kindness. May we adorn ourselves with glory and honor, heal our souls, remove all evil thoughts and reflections from our hearts, remember us for good every day, visit us with salvation and mercy, bless all the work of our hands, accept our prayers before You at every time and hour, atone for our sins and iniquities, and bring salvation near. Wherever we stand, bless us and bring us good tidings, salvation, and consolation. Bring us joy and gladness, and let sorrow and sighing flee, as it is written: “The redeemed of the L-rd shall return and come to Zion with song and everlasting joy upon their heads; they shall attain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee. And a redeemer shall come to Zion.” Through your merit, Eliyahu, the One Who answered you on Mount Carmel—may He answer us as well. Amen; may it be Your will. Through the merit of all the righteous and pious mentioned above, Rabbi Kruspedai, of blessed memory, Rabbi Yehudah bar Ilai, Rabbi Yosei of Peki’in, Rabbi Chiya and his sons, and Rav Amnona Saba, may their merits protect us. Amen. May the Holy One, blessed be He, protect us by fulfilling all the desires of our hearts for the good, for the service of His Blessed Name forever, and all our needs. May we merit seeing the rebuilding of the Temple and the coming of our Mashiach speedily in our days. Amen. [Light 1 candle] At the conclusion of the prayers: 1.
