Yechezkel Katzenellenbogen of Hamburg

Rabbi Yechezkel ben Avraham Katzenellenbogen - Baal "Knesset Yechezkel" (1668-1749)   Yahrzeit - 23 Tammuz Resting place - Hamburg, Germany He grew up in Brest, where he studied under Rav Mordechai Zuskind, son of Rav Moshe Rotenberg, who lived there until about 1691. He first served as Av Beit Din of the town of Zeitel, then as Av Beit Din of Raseiniai. In 1707 he was called to Keidan, and in 1714 to Altona, where he served the community for 35 years until his death. At that time the community was under Danish rule. Yechezkel married Esther, daughter of R. Solomon Zalman, who was the son of Rabbi Yoel of Brest (grandson of Rabbi Yoel Sirkes, known as the Bach). Esther died in 1748 and was buried in the Konigstrasse cemetery in Altona (headstone No. 3072). Rav Yechezkel passed away in Altona on July 9 (23 Tammuz), 1749. He is buried next to his wife. Headstone No. 3073. His son R. David succeeded him in 1714 as ABD of Keidan, and he in turn was succeeded by his son R.
