The Protective Prayer of Rabbeinu Tam
Before you is a prayer that for many years has protected the Jewish people and brought them good fortune.This prayer was composed by the great Rabbeinu Tam, one of the Rishonim, grandson of the holy Rashi. Rabbi Yosef Zeligman Chan of Nördlingen, who served as Rosh Yeshiva of the Dayanim and Rabbis of the city of Frankfurt, quotes in his book "Yosef Ometz" (תפד) a passage from the Sefer of Rabbi Eliezer Matriush:
"This prayer has been received from our Rabbeinu Tam, who promised: 'To anyone who recites this prayer every day, I guarantee that nothing bad will happen to him throughout that entire day, and he will succeed in all his endeavors.'" (ושבע פעמים:) גָּד גְּדוּד יְגוּדֶנּוּ וְהוּא יָגֻד עָקֵב. כָּךְ אַצְלִיחַ בִּדְרָכַי כְּמוֹ שֶׁעָשָׂה יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בְּעָבְרוֹ הַיַּרְדֵּן עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּמִּלְחָמָה עִם הַכְּנַעֲנִי וְשָׁב בְּשָׁלוֹם לְאַרְצוֹ. Transliteration «Bevakasha mikem Michael ve-Gavriel u-Refael, shetaamdu bitfila, bevakasha uvtachanunim lifnei Melech malchei ha-melachim ha-kadosh Baruch-hu, she'atzliach be-chol derachai u-vechol makom she'ani holech, hen milistim shelo yazikuni, hen mishedin, hen mililin, hen me'ish ve'isha mikol davar ra, hen mecherev vedever, hen mera'av hen mikol pur'anuyot ha-holechim uva'im la'olam. Min hakol yatzileini Ado-nai Elohei Yisrael shelo yishletu vi, lo be-gufi ve-lo bim'odi ve-lo be-zar'i. Translation (I ask you, Michael, Gavriel and Refael, rise up in prayer. Please, pray before the King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He, that good fortune accompany me on every path and in every place I come to. That I suffer no harm from criminals, demons, evil people, or any bad thing: from the sword and plague, famine and all the calamities that come into the world. Save me from everything, L-rd, G-d of Israel, so that nothing be done to me — neither to my body, nor to my property, nor to my offspring. May it be Your will, L-rd, my G-d and G-d of my fathers, to make this hour a time of Your favor and to hear my prayer and my request).
