Tehillim for Rectifying a Woman through Speech
Tehillim 89:2
- "Chasdei Hashem olam ashira; ledor vador odia emunatecha befi" - (I will sing of the kindness of the L-rd forever; from generation to generation I will make Your faithfulness known with my mouth).
The primary spiritual work of women is the rectification of the mouth and of speech. It is more difficult for women than for men to guard their speech. The root of this goes back to the beginning of Creation. Man was created from earth (adamah), and was therefore called Adam, which alludes to silence (demamah). Woman, not having been created from earth, lacks this foundation of silence. She was called Chavah, which alludes to speech: "And night to night conveys (yechaveh) knowledge." (Tehillim 19:3)
Rabbi Nachman of Breslov taught that faith depends on a person's mouth: "I will make Your faithfulness known with my mouth"; Moreover, a woman is associated with the sefirah of Malchut, while faith is also called Malchut. The mouth is likewise associated with this sefirah: "Kingship is the mouth." (Tikuney Zohar 17a)
Tehillim 39:4
- "Cham-libi bekirbi, behagigi tiv'ar esh; dibarti bilshoni" - (My heart grew hot within me; a fire burned as I meditated. I spoke with my tongue). In a woman's mouth, "a fire is confined" — "Ten kavim of conversation descended into the world: women took nine, and the entire world took one." If a woman cannot cool this fire through prayer and the recitation of Tehillim, her inner fire will burst outward in the form of slander. If a woman wishes to direct her mouth toward the Almighty, like our Matriarchs did, she will achieve everything. (Rav Shalom Arush)
