Tehillim 23 - Hashem's Flock
Tehillim 23:4
- “Shivtecha u-mishantecha hemah yenachamuni” - (Your rod and Your staff comfort me.)
King David, speaking of the staff that brings comfort, acknowledges Hashem as his Shepherd.
King Solomon, in (Shir HaShirim 1:8) also compares the Jewish people to sheep: “Im lo ted'i lach hayafah banashim, tzei lach be-ikvei hatzon u-re'i et gediyotayich al mishkenot ha-ro'im” - (If you do not know, fairest among women, go follow the tracks of the sheep and pasture your young goats beside the shepherds' tents).
When a sheep strays from the flock, the shepherd's staff drives it back into place. The Jewish people are Hashem's sheep. When a Jew strays from his purpose—from the mitzvot, Torah, and maasim tovim—Hashem, the Shepherd of the Jewish people, strikes him with the rod (staff), and in this world this manifests as yissurim (suffering): financial, physical, and emotional. Hashem precisely tailors these afflictions to fit the measure of a person's soul, in order to heal his soul. Therefore, Chazal teach that Hashem does not give a person tests he cannot endure—all tests are given according to a person's abilities. For every affliction, we must thank Hashem and ask Him to grant us the wisdom to understand what Hashem is telling a Jew through that suffering.
