"Modeh Ani Lefanecha" - the Secret of the 12 Words of the Morning Prayer
"Modeh Ani Lefanecha" - the Secret of the 12 Words of the Morning Prayer
"Modeh Ani" (I give thanks) is a prayer of gratitude recited immediately upon waking in the morning:
מודה אני לפניך מלך חי וקיים שהחזרת בי נשמתי בחמלה, רבה אמונתך.
- "Modeh ani lefanecha Melech Chai ve-Kayam shehechezarta bi nishmati bechemla, raba emunatecha" - (I give thanks before You, Living and Eternal King, for You have mercifully returned my soul within me. Great is Your faithfulness).
Unlike other prayers and blessings, which are not recited before "Netilat Yadayim" (washing of the hands), this prayer is recited before Netilat Yadayim, since it does not contain the Name of G-d.
The author of this prayer is Rabbi Moshe ben Machir. He was one of the great tzadikim of Tzfat, who lived about 400 years ago.
His chaver (colleague) was Rabbi Shmuel de Uzeda, author of "Midrash Shmuel" on Pirkei Avot.

The 12 Words of "Modeh Ani"
The 12 words of "Modeh Ani" (women say "Modah") equal the 12 seconds that, as a British scientist recently discovered, a person needs in order to fully wake up. According to British researchers, it is precisely the first minutes of the morning hours - the time of waking - that fall into the risk zone for fatal strokes and heart attacks. Hashem gave us something that the world is only now, after millennia, coming to understand.
The 12 roshei tevot (first letters) of this prayer מודה אני לפניך מלך חי וקיים שהחזרת בי נשמתי בחמלה, רבה אמונתך - form the phrase: מא-ל מחושב נברא - "mi-Kel mechushav nivra" - (the design of creation comes from G-d).
מודה אני לפניך "Modeh ani lefanecha" - has the same gematria value, 306, as the word אשה (woman), and the word דבש (honey).
According to our Sages (may their memory be blessed), the reason for this prayer is that "sleep is 1/60th of death," and upon waking, in the transition from sleep to wakefulness, a person feels the need to give thanks that a new day has come, both in nature as a whole and in his own life in particular.
There are 4 levels to "Modeh Ani" corresponding to the 4 divisions of Torah interpretation - Pardes: "Peshat" (simple meaning), "Remez" (hint), "Drash" (in-depth interpretation), and "Sod" (hidden meaning).
1. Peshat - it is a prayer thanking G-d for "returning my soul within me," since, by plain common sense, a person is obligated to give thanks for the return of his soul immediately upon waking from sleep.
2. Remez - the return of the soul to [a person's] body every morning hints at Techiyat HaMetim (the resurrection of the dead). For "sleep is 1/60th of death," and the return of the soul is, in a sense, a resurrection of the dead.
3. Drash - the Holy One, Blessed be He, trusts a person: "great is Your faithfulness." We see this from His actions, for He returns the soul to a person despite the person's various debts before G-d. From this we should learn to judge every person favorably (taking into account only their merits), and also [one person] should not withhold another's collateral on the grounds that the debtor owes him something.
4. Sod - "Melech Chai ve-Kayam" (the Living and Eternal King) - represents "Bechinat HaMalchut" - bechina meaning an aspect or object of study; Malchut means "kingship." Melech corresponds to Sefirat HaMalchut [a sefira being a spiritual aspect, in this text equivalent to bechina]; since Malchut seeks to unite with the light of Bechinat HaYesod (Chai ve-Kayam corresponds to Sefirat HaYesod ["Yesod" meaning foundation, basis]). For this reason, the prayer "Modeh Ani" (I give thanks) states: "Melech Chai ve-Kayam shehechezarta bi nishmati" - "[I,] Malchut, reach toward Yesod, so that He may return my soul to me."
