Rabbi Shlomo ben Avraham Amar - a great kabbalist from Marrakesh
Yahrzeit -
Burial place - Marrakesh, Morocco - Cimetière Juif de Marrakech
He was born and lived in the city of Marrakesh (Morocco).
He studied Torah together with Rabbi Avraham Azulai [the first], then studied under Rabbi Yitzchak Delouya (all three are buried in the same cemetery).
Once a messenger from the Land of Israel arrived in Marrakesh with a very difficult question, which the Rabbis of Jerusalem had tried to resolve in six different ways, while Rabbi Moshe Galante rejected all of them and proposed a seventh way.
The next day, the messenger found a page in the Gemara containing all seven explanations that Rabbi Shlomo Amar had proposed.
Upon hearing of this, the chief rabbi of Marrakesh, Rabbi Yitzchak Delouya, asked his attendants to bring new garments for Rabbi Shlomo Amar, and during the Mincha prayer he inducted Rabbi Shlomo into the Rabbanut.
Rabbi Shlomo Amar served as Av Beit Din in Marrakesh. He was renowned for his knowledge of Kabbalah, and his kabbalistic interpretations are recorded in the book "The King's Palace."
He taught: "If there is a clear halachic ruling and the Kabbalah does not agree with it, one must follow the halachic ruling; but when there is disagreement among the halachic rulings themselves, one should follow the rulings of the kabbalists."
In 1778 he returned his soul to its Maker, and after his passing it was said: "The name of Rabbi Shlomo Amar is a bittul kavod (a diminishing of the glory) of the Torah."
About six months later, he appeared in a dream to Rabbi Avraham Azulai [the first] and told him that he had asked Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai about the interpretation of a question they had discussed in the Zohar, and that Rashbi had said that Rabbi Avraham's interpretation was the true one.
May the merit of the tzadik Rabbi Shlomo Amar protect Am Yisrael!
