Burial place - Vienna, Austria, Jewish cemetery in Roßau, Seegasse (in the courtyard of the Nursing Home)
He was born in 1658 in Worms, Germany, and passed away in 1724. He studied in the yeshivas of Worms and Frankfurt. In 1684 he married the daughter of a rabbi from Mannheim and moved to Vienna.
Within a short time he became the wealthiest Jew of his era.
He served as finance minister under the Austrian emperors Leopold I, Joseph I, and Charles VI.
In exchange for his services, Rav Wertheimer asked for better treatment for his fellow Jews throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
He championed the right of Jews to live in major cities, including Vienna and Frankfurt.
He also saved the Jews of Rothenburg from expulsion and intervened when a similar threat loomed over the Jews of Worms and Frankfurt.
Rav Wertheimer was a talmid chacham and helped establish 40 communities in Hungary.
He founded and financed a yeshiva in Frankfurt and appointed his son-in-law, Rav Moshe Kann, as its head.
In Vienna he established a Beit Din.
In 1712 he rebuilt the town of Nikolsburg, which had been destroyed by fire.
Rav Wertheimer was also responsible for collecting funds from across Europe, which were then sent on to Eretz Yisrael.
Shimshon Wertheimer left behind commentaries on the Torah, on the Midrashim, and works on Kabbalah.
Rav Shimshon Wertheimer passed away in 1724 in Vienna.
May the merit of the tzadik protect our people!
