The Rebbe Maharash
4th Lubavitcher Rebbe
Rabbi Shmuel ben Menachem Mendel (Tzemach Tzedek) Schneerson – The Rebbe Maharash –
4th Lubavitcher Rebbe (1882).
Rabbi Shmuel Schneerson was born in Lubavitch on 2 Iyar 1834 and was the seventh son of the Tzemach Tzedek. He faced competition from three of his brothers, most notably from Rabbi Yehuda Leib Schneerson, who founded a dynasty in Kapust after their father's passing. His other brothers also founded dynasties in Lyady, Nezhin, and Ovruch.
In 1848, Schneerson married the daughter of his brother, Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman Schneerson. A few months later she passed away, and he then married Rebbetzin Rivka, granddaughter of Rabbi Dovber Schneuri, the Mitteler Rebbe. He had three sons, Rabbi Zalman Aharon, Rabbi Sholom Dovber, and Rabbi Menachem Mendel, as well as one daughter, Devorah Leah.
It is said that Schneerson kept carriages ready for evacuating books in case of fire.
Beyond his communal activity, he had wide-ranging intellectual interests. He spoke several languages, including Latin. He wrote extensively on various religious and secular topics, and much of his work was never published, remaining only in manuscript form. His talks began to be published under the title "Likkutei Torat Shmuel" in 1945 by the Kehot publishing house, and to date 12 volumes have been printed.
He passed away in Lubavitch on 13 Tishrei 1882, leaving behind three sons and two daughters, and was succeeded by his son Sholom Dovber.
Schneerson called for the study of Kabbalah as a prerequisite for true humanity:
"A person capable of grasping the seder hishtalshelut (the kabbalistic secrets concerning the emergence of all existence at every moment) — and who fails to do so — cannot be considered a true human being. At every moment and every hour, a person must know where his soul stands. It is a mitzvah (commandment) and an obligation to know the seder hishtalshelut.
Sayings
"The world says: 'If you cannot go under, go over.' But I say, Lechatchilah Ariber: 'From the outset, go over.'"
"You cannot deceive G-d; ultimately, you cannot deceive others either. The only one you can deceive is yourself. And deceiving a fool is no great achievement."
