Mekubal Rabbi Yaakov Slama - Tunisia Yahrzeit - 7 Sivan Burial place - Cimetière juif de Nabeul, Tunisia Rabbi Yaakov Slama was a Talmudic scholar from Tunisia, where he taught at the yeshiva of the esteemed Rabbi Raphael El-Fassi, whose colleague he became after having been his student. In 1773 he traveled for a time to Nabeul, his wife's hometown - she was the daughter of Mordechai El-Guez - and soon came to be held in great esteem there for his knowledge and piety. After his passing in 1774, he became the object of popular veneration: many of the faithful would come to pray at his grave and invoke his power of intercession before Ha-Shem, seeking a cure for infertility or healing from illness. It is said that in 1934 the rabbi appeared in a dream to Mr. Mardoche Carilla, a well-known figure in the city of Nabeul, and asked him to erect a monument on his grave, which until then had been hidden beneath an olive tree. Mr. Carilla, a pious and sensitive man, erected a mausoleum over the rabbi's grave that same year and dedicated it to the community, proposing that an official pilgrimage be organized there every year after Shavuot. The proceeds from this pilgrimage, together with the donations made at the grave of the esteemed Rabbi Yaakov Slama, always went to benefit the destitute Jews of Nabeul - three quarters to the Fund, and one quarter to the Talmud Torah school. Since then, this pilgrimage has taken place every year, drawing a considerable influx of the faithful arriving from all over Tunisia and the world. Recently, this pious event was moved to August at the initiative of the president of the Association of Nabeuliens, in order to allow the faithful from the diaspora, returning to Nabeul for their summer vacation, to take part.
