Reb Yeshaya (Shayele) Kerestirer was a talmid of the “Divrei Chaim” of Tzanz and the “Ach Pri Tevuah” of Liska.

He was known as a Baal Mofet (miracle worker). His photograph is one of the most widely recognized in the world.

He lived more than 100 years ago and was a great tzadik. Sages such as Rabbi Yissachar Dov of Belz and Rabbi Meir of Dvorna testified that Rabbi Yeshaya of Kerestir had a special connection with Shamayim (Heaven).

The tzadikim and Admorim of his time would send all those in need of a blessing for parnassah to Kerestir. It was there, with the tzadik's help, that many Jews found the key to a stable life.

How did it come to be that the “Key to good Parnassah” was placed in the hands of Reb Shayele, as the people affectionately called him?

The Gedolei HaDor of his generation said that he performed this mitzvah to perfection! The “Beis Avraham” of Slonim told one of his chassidim, as he was about to leave him: “On your way home, stop in the town of Kerestir, and you will see a unique tzadik who reached the highest levels of holiness simply through his complete mesirat nefesh for the Bnei Yisrael!”

Anyone with a serious problem — whether concerning parnassah, a zivug (marriage match), or health — who turned to the tzadik Reb Shayele would experience supernatural miracles.

Reb Shayele made a pact with Hashem Yitborach: “Ribono Shel Olam,” he said to the Creator, “I will do more than I am able to provide for the hungry and the unfortunate, and You, יביוכל, do more than You are able to help me be capable of feeding them all.”

And indeed, Reb Shayele managed to provide for everyone, at times even in ways that transcended nature. Those who helped him prepare food recount with awe that they cooked with only the limited ingredients available in the house, yet there was always enough food to feed everyone, no matter how many people came to sit at his tables.

An open miracle

Once, when a group of chassidim arrived at Reb Shayele's court, Rabbeinu instructed everyone to set the table for the group. One of his attendants said to him anxiously, “There's almost no soup left in the pot. What should we do?” Reb Shayele took a ladle, stirred the pot a bit, and said, “Why do you say that? There's enough for everyone.” The same attendant went over and looked into the pot — it was almost full to the brim. This was an open miracle.

On Motzaei Shabbat, Reb Shayele would take a pot from the pantry and distribute food to all who asked. He kept feeding people, and the contents of the pot never ran out until no one was left hungry in the room.

When Reb Shayele was gravely ill and about to leave this world, he called for a woman from the community who was in need of assistance. When she came to him, he promised that he would take care of her on condition that she make sure everyone attending his funeral would have enough food and drink. This was what concerned him at the very moment he was about to leave his earthly home. The woman fulfilled his final wish, and she was provided for the rest of her life.

Segula for Parnassah — the Tefillah of the Baal Maftei'ach Parnassah

On the 3rd of Iyar, Reb Shayele left this world. He himself gave everything of himself to gemilut chassadim — and before departing this world, he asked: “Be my partners in gemilut chassadim, and I will pray to open the gates of Parnassah for you!”

The Key to Parnassah remains in his hands. The tzadikim composed a special tefillah for the Yom Hilula of Reb Shayele of Kerestir, which has brought about many yeshuot throughout the world. This is the “Tefillah of the Baal Maftei'ach Parnassah.”

Translation Master of the World! You are great in Your wisdom and glory, and Your eyes are open, watching over the ways of all people, to give each one what he needs and what he lacks. And You have given us true tzadikim who bring Your creations abundance, life, blessing, plenty, and holiness. In Your great mercy, You gave this world Rabbi Yeshaya ben Rabbi Moshe, for he grants abundance to the entire people, and into his hands You placed the Key of Abundance. And so I come before You today, I, Your servant (name plus mother's name), to entreat, standing before You, and to ask for mercy on this day of the hilula, as Rabbi Chama bar Chanina said: “After their passing, the righteous are even greater advocates for us than during their lifetime” — therefore, in the merit of this holy tzadik, grant me and all my household abundance, but without hard labor, and ease for us the curse of Adam HaRishon, “by the sweat of your brow shall you eat bread,” for this is very difficult for us, while for You, the Master of Wonders, it is easy to sustain us without great effort. Please help me, You who sustain the entire world with Your kindness and mercy, and give me and all my household everything we need in the physical world — food, clothing, housing, and anything else we may require — so that I will never have to ask of mortals, but only from Your full, generous, and sustaining Hand may great abundance come to us whenever we are in need, and may nothing be lacking, neither for me nor for my household. Please deal with me according to Your mercy and truth, in the merit of what the righteous Rabbi Yeshaya ben Rabbi Moshe did for Your people Israel; forgive me again and again, do not leave our supplications unanswered, and bless me with a complete blessing, for You are the One Who hears prayer.

Segula against mice A portrait of Rabbi Shayele of Kerestir is a segula against mice. The Rebbe promised that no home or building where his portrait is kept would suffer from mice.

Rav Shayele taught that someone who lacks good fortune should turn the fish over, since the word דג “dag” (fish), reversed, forms the word גד gad” (since both words are made up of the same letters), thereby flipping one's mazal for the better. In Parashat HaMan it is written: “And it was like coriander seed.” (Beshalach 16:31) In the word for “coriander” – “gad” – the letter ג“gimmel” comes before the letter ד – “dalet”, while in the word for “fish” – “dag” – the letter “dalet” comes before the letter “gimmel.” The letter “gimmel” is associated with the word “gadlut” – greatness and influence. The letter “dalet” is associated with the word: “dalut” – poverty and lowliness. By eating fish with such kavanot, one can, in the merit of the tzadik Shayele of Kerestir, change one's mazal.
