Rabbi Avraham bar Yisrael Azulai HaRishon was one of the most esteemed Moroccan sages of his generation, a Kabbalist and Baal HaMofet.

Rav Avraham HaRishon was one of the greatest rabbis.
The parents and grandparents of Rav Avraham Azulai left Spain during the Inquisition.
Rabbi Avraham settled with his entire family in the city of Fez.
All the residents of the city, both Jews and non-Jews, respected him not only for his great erudition in the revealed and hidden aspects of the Torah, but also for his reputation as a miracle worker, which always accompanied his blessings.
As a child, the grandson of Rav Avraham HaRishon (named Avraham after him, known as Rav Avraham Azulai of Hevron) stood out from other children his age with his great intelligence.
Rabbi Avraham HaRishon studied under the head of the Marrakesh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yitzchak Delouya, in whose honor a synagogue was built in Har Bracha. He studied there together with his friends - Rabbi Mordechai Attia, author of the book "Mister Dror" on the Talmud, the Kabbalist Rabbi Shlomo Amar, and the Kabbalist Rabbi Avraham ibn Musa, author of the book "Minchat Sotah" (on Tractate Sotah), with whom he had discussions on many topics in Torah.
He also studied and taught for a time in Tetouan and Meknes in Morocco, and for this reason he is cited in several places as Rav Avraham Azulai of Meknes.
Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar - the Ohr HaChaim - praised his lofty knowledge of Kabbalah.
His descendant Rabbeinu Chida also writes about him: "I heard from a living witness that he was a holy man who wrote amulets for the sick, and the sick would be healed immediately, and he was careful with his amulets."
He is buried next to Rabbi David Chazan.
