Rabbi Shimshon Chaim Nachmani - the "Zera Shimshon"
Rabbi Shimshon Chaim ben Rav Nachman Michael Nachmani - one of the greatest sages, who lived 300 years ago.
Yahrzeit - 6 Elul
Resting place - Reggio, Italy
He is known for his work - "Zera Shimshon" - commentaries on the Torah portions.
His book "Zera Shimshon" is a segula for children.
He put much effort into ensuring that people could learn from his books. He also emphasized that after his neshama left this world, Jews should continue to learn from his books. For this, he promised everyone who studies his works - good parnassa, nachat from children, good health, good shidduchim, and so on.
In the introduction, he explains that since he lost his only son during his lifetime, he wrote his sefarim to perpetuate his memory after death, and that this would be his legacy in place of children.
He had only one request of those who study his works:
"I beg you with ten measures of pleading - choose from among my chiddushim the work that finds favor in your eyes, because your study will bring rest to my soul.
This righteousness will remain with you always - 'nourishing' you in this world, so that you may be satisfied in the next.
In this merit, Ha-Shem will reward you with children, health, and sustenance.
And now, my brothers and friends, do true kindness, 'and your eyes shall see your children and grandchildren, like olive trees around your table, wise and understanding, and homes filled with all that is good, wealth and honor, and they shall not leave your children until they see G-d.'
Rabbi Shimshon Chaim served as rabbi of four large communities throughout Italy, and toward the end of his life he settled in the city of Reggio Emilia.
Rabbi Shimshon Chaim passed away on 6 Elul, 1779, in the city of Reggio, Italy.
At his funeral, many words of praise were spoken, not only about his erudition in Torah, but also about his love for the Jewish people.
The communities of Italy regard Rabbi Shimshon Chaim as their Rabbi. Renowned rabbis of that generation wrote wonderful things about him, including the Chida. He also referred to Rabbi Shimshon Chaim's extensive knowledge of Kabbalah, noting that he was well versed in practical Kabbalah, and that he instructed that his kabbalistic writings be buried with him in his grave. (Shem HaGedolim, chapter "Ma'arechet Sefarim," Letter 46)
Rabbi Shimshon Chaim lived in the era of the holy "Ohr HaChaim" (Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar) - a teacher of the Chida, and was his friend.
At the beginning of his book "Zera Shimshon" - Rabbi Shimshon Chaim wrote that he needed to leave a memory in this world, because he had no descendants. This is why he wrote the book and named it "Zera Shimshon", meaning "the seed of Shimshon." Rabbi Shimshon Chaim published the book a year before his passing.
He also wrote "Toldot Shimshon" - on Pirkei Avot.
