Gaon Rabbi Daniel Steinschneider of Prostitz (1759-1846) was born in Tobitschau, near Prostejov, in Hungary.
Rabbi Daniel studied first in Moravia, and then in Pressburg under the city's Rabbi, Meir Shaul - the Maharam Barby, and was later appointed by Meshulam Igra to his Beit Din. He eventually succeeded Rabbi Tosca as head of the Beit Din. He was also appointed rabbi of the Talmud study society (Chevra Shas) founded in Pressburg.
He published the "Sefer HaYashar" of Rabbeinu Tam and left behind Talmudic responsa in manuscript. Responsa addressed to him appear in the responsa of the Chatam Sofer, in the "Noda BiYehuda" of Rabbi Yechezkel Landau, and in the responsa of other great contemporaries of his.
In 1807 he initiated the appointment of the Chatam Sofer as Rabbi of Pressburg and was his loyal friend.
He is considered a leading halachic authority, and served the community of Pressburg for more than 50 years. Rabbi Daniel was the great-grandson of Rabbi Shmidel, who came to Moravia in the 17th century from Amsterdam.
His son, Rabbi Meir, was born in 1916, and his mohel was the Chatam Sofer (mentioned in the circumcision booklet).
