Asher ben Yaakov Avinu - 12 Tribes
Asher ben Yaakov - the 8th son of Yaakov Avinu and his third wife Zilpah, though it was Leah who gave him his name.
Yahrzeit - 20 Shevat
Burial place - Tel Kedesh;
He was born in Charan and lived 123 years.
The birth of Asher - Yaakov's 8th son - was connected with happiness.
«וַתֹּאמֶר לֵאָה – בְּאָשְׁרִי, כִּי אִשְּׁרוּנִי בָּנוֹת; וַתִּקְרָא אֶת-שְׁמוֹ, אָשֵׁר» –
- «Vatomer Leah: 'be-Oshri ki ishruni banot vatikra et-shmo Asher'» -
(And Leah said: «Happy am I, for the daughters will call me happy». And she named him Asher». (Bereishit 30:13)
The name Asher comes from the word «ashrei» (happy).
He was entrusted with the material provision of the Beit HaMikdash.
Olive oil for the menorah's lamps, for sacrifices and for anointing the Kohen Gadol was obtained from olives grown in Asher's portion.
The chilazon snail, from which the blue dye for the tzitzit threads and the garments of the Kohen Gadol was prepared, also came ashore within his territory.
Yaakov Avinu's blessing to his son Asher:
- «Me-Asher Shmeina Lachmo Vehu Yiten Maadaney Melech» –
(From Asher shall come rich bread, and he shall provide royal delicacies). (Bereishit 49:20)
Of all Yaakov's sons, Asher received from his father a special, at first glance strange, blessing.
"Rich," in the original text – «shmena» – from the root «shemen» (oil). And the word «shmoneh» – 8, is also derived from this root.
Midrash Bereishit Rabbah (ch. 98) explains that the word «shmena» in this case hints that this «rich bread» establishes the garments of the Kohen Gadol, consisting of 8 pieces.
And that the expression «royal delicacies» hints at some especially refined dish, similar to the dishes «kaflaot» and «anifkiot».
From the text of the Talmud (tractate Shabbat, 80) we learn that «anifkiot» is also an anointing oil made from a special herbal spice, mor. Let us add that the word «kaflaot» comes from the word «kefel», double.
Moshe Rabbeinu's blessing to Asher:
«Baruch mibanim Asher, yehi retzuy echav vetovel ba-shemen raglo» -
(Blessed above sons be Asher; may he be favored by his brothers, and dip his foot in oil). (Devarim 33:24)
The tribe of Asher has always been the tribe that reconciles our people (as stated in Midrash Sifrei on the Book of Devarim).
A bearer of knowledge of the higher worlds (symbolized by the number 8). Bringing us «royal delicacies», that is, knowledge, including of the essence of the double letters «kaflaot» of the alphabet in which the Torah was given.
The Zohar on Vayechi says that the blessing to Asher testifies to his potential, which allows him to connect the higher worlds with our world, to reveal to us the essence of Shabbat (as a window into the higher worlds), and to point to the connection of the Creator's Plan.
Hence the explanation of the great Rabbeinu HaKadosh - Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, who said that the essence of the script «ktav Ashuri» – meushar, in other words – imbued with the essence of Asher.
Rabbeinu Chida says that Asher, son of Yaakov Avinu, remains at the entrance to Gehinnom and saves those who studied Mishnayot. He bases this on the pasuk: מֵאָשֵׁר שְׁמֵנָה לַחְמוֹ, noting that the word שמנה contains the same letters as משנה. («Avodat HaKodesh-Moreh Betzba»)
Serach bat Asher
Asher's daughter, Serach, is the only granddaughter of Yaakov mentioned in the Torah:
«the sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah — and their sister Serach». (Bereishit 46:17)
She is also mentioned in the Book of Bamidbar (26:46): «And the name of Asher's daughter was Serach». She is also mentioned in the Talmud.
It was Serach, daughter of Asher, who thought of how to break the news to her elderly grandfather that Yosef was alive - she sang him the good news in the form of a song, so that Yaakov's heart could bear it and not break from happiness.
It was Serach, daughter of Asher, who told Moshe Rabbeinu where in the Nile the remains of Yosef were located (the Egyptians had sunk his coffin, weighing 500 talents, into the Nile so that the Jews could not find and raise it) - for Yosef had made the sons of Israel swear an oath, saying: — «When G-d remembers you, carry my bones up from here».
In «Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer» (48) it is said that the secret of the final Redemption is contained in the 5 final letters – Mantzepach, and was passed from Avraham to Yitzchak, from Yitzchak to Yaakov, from Yaakov to Yosef, Yosef passed it to his brothers, and Asher passed this secret to his daughter, Serach.
It was to Serach that the elders turned when Moshe came with signs of the coming redemption, and it was Serach who confirmed the validity of the signs, which she had heard about from her father Asher.
The Sages say that because of her righteousness she did not taste death and was taken alive into Gan Eden.

Asher ben Yaakov and Mishnayot
Rabbeinu Chida (Shem HaGedolim 2, letter ת 55) says in the name of the Arizal (may his merit shield us), that when a person dies, if he is sent to Gehinnom, he cries out to each of the 12 tribes to come and save him. None of them answers, except Asher ben Yaakov. Asher asks the person whether he studied Mishnayot during his lifetime. If the answer is yes, he brings the person out of Gehinnom.
