Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov Algazi was the rabbi of Izmir, and in the last several years of his life served as Rishon LeZion in Jerusalem.
He was born to Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi and grew up in Izmir. He studied under Rabbi Chaim ben Yaakov Abulafia and Yitzchak HaKohen Rapoport.
In Izmir, he initiated the publication of the kabbalistic work "Chemdat Yamim" (by an unknown author, though some attribute it to Algazi himself).
In 1735, Algazi moved to Ottoman Palestine. He studied at the kabbalistic yeshiva "Beit El." He was a member of the Beit Din of Eliezer Nachum. He served as head of "Yeshivat Nevei Shalom Brit Avraham," where the greatest Torah scholars of Jerusalem studied.
Rishon LeZion Nissim Chaim Moshe Mizrahi passed away in 1749. That same year, Algazi was appointed to take his place as Rishon LeZion.
Algazi passed away in 1757 and was buried on Har HaZeitim, near the grave of Rabbi Shalom Sharabi.
His son, Yom Tov Algazi, named after his grandfather, was a disciple of the great Rashash.
