Tikun Chatzot (Tikun Leah and Tikun Rachel) - The Prayer of David HaMelech

The prayer composed by David HaMelech was added to the three obligatory prayers (Shacharit, Mincha, and Arvit) and is called Tikun Chatzot (the Rectification of Midnight). This prayer consists mainly of the Psalms of David. The Talmud (Berachot 3b) teaches that King David himself would always wake at midnight to sing his psalms to the Almighty, and it is therefore held that he instituted this prayer. The Kabbalists call it the fourth prayer. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 107a) relates that David prayed to the Creator, saying: "You are called the G-d of Avraham, the G-d of Yitzchak, and the G-d of Ya'akov; I wish that You be called the G-d of David as well." It emerges that just as Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya'akov established the three main prayers, David likewise established an additional prayer, although it is not considered obligatory. Midnight is considered an "Et Ratzon" (a time of Divine favor, Talmud, Yevamot 72a), when the light of the Creator's Kindness is renewed before the start of a new day. According to the Vilna Gaon, the four times are also hinted at in the passage of the Shema: "when you sit in your home, when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise" - these hint at the four prayers, corresponding to the four parts of the day: before noon (a time for sitting), after noon (a time for walking), night until midnight (a time for lying down), and after midnight (a time for rising). It turns out that for these four times, Avraham, Yitzchak, Ya'akov, and David established four prayers - Shacharit, Mincha, Arvit, and Tikun Chatzot. Tikun Chatzot may be recited at any time after midnight until the end of the night, but there is no prohibition against reciting these psalms at any other time as well. In any case, there is a mitzvah to remember the destruction of the Temple, and although night is the most fitting time for this (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 1:2, and the Vilna Gaon there), it can be done at any other time as well. According to the custom of the Arizal, during the Three Weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av (Bein HaMetzarim), Tikun Chatzot is also recited in the afternoon. Tikun Chatzot is divided into two parts: 1) Tikun Rachel - the sadder portion, for the life of Rachel Imeinu was also very difficult. This part of the Tikun is a cry of the soul; we recite psalms that speak of the destruction of the Temple and the exile of the Jewish people.
