Salvific Psalms
Those versed in the hidden wisdom reveal that at times individual verses of Tehillim, recited several times and in an unusual manner (in both the regular and reverse order), have a greater effect than simply reading the entire psalm.
We have compiled a selection of such verses based on lessons revealing the inner meaning of Tehillim, drawing on the works “Shimush Tehillim,” “Shimush Tehillim ha-Kadmon,” “Zohar ha-Kadosh” and other Midrashim.
Important! If the number of times to recite the pasuk (verse) is not specified, it is best to recite it as many times as possible—the order accepted by the Sages: 3, 7, 10, 13, 17, 18, 24, or 40 times, depending on the severity of the problem.
3 times—“Chazakah” (a concept in Judaism according to which, when a person performs any action three times in succession, it acquires permanence and strength);
7 times—the number 7 symbolizes perfection and recurrence: the world was created in seven days, there are seven musical notes, seven species with which Eretz Yisrael is blessed, seven branches of the Menorah, and so forth;
10 times—the number of perfection: the ten sefirot through which the world was created, the Ten Commandments inscribed on the Tablets of the Covenant, the Ten Utterances, and a minyan—a group of ten Jews over whom the Shechinah rests;
13 times—an important number for the Jewish people: 13 is the age of bar mitzvah, when one begins fulfilling the commandments of the Torah; the thirteen principles of Jewish faith; and the thirteen principles of Rachamim (mercy)—the thirteen ways in which Hashem governs this world;
17 times—its gematria equals the word “tov” (good);
18 times—the gematria of the word חי “chai” (living);
24 times—the number of fullness and perfection: the twenty-four gifts to the Kohanim, the twenty-four adornments of Chavah by the Almighty, the twenty-four adornments of the Shechinah, twenty-four hours in a day, and the twenty-four books of Tanakh;
40 times—the number of purification: Moshe led the Jews through the wilderness for forty years to cleanse them of slavery; forty seah in a mikveh (the measure of purification); forty days of the Flood (the purification of the world); after forty days of prayer, one’s middot change; after forty days of prayer, one’s mazal changes, and so forth.
1. For protection from ayin hara and for hatzlachah
(Tehillim 5:8)
First recite the phrase:
- “Ani omer zot al daat Rav Huna” - (I say these lines according to the teaching of Rav Huna).
Then, preferably over the person’s head, recite the following pasuk 40 times:
וַאֲנִ֗י בְּרֹ֣ב חַ֭סְדְּךָ אָב֣וֹא בֵיתֶ֑ךָ אֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥ה אֶל־הֵֽיכַל־קָ֝דְשְׁךָ֗ בְּיִרְאָתֶֽךָ - “Va’ani, berov chasdecha, avo veitecha, eshtachaveh el heichal kodshecha beyiratecha” -
(And I, through Your abundant kindness, will enter Your house; I will bow toward Your holy sanctuary in awe of You.)
This pasuk contains ten words—40 times 10 equals 400. It is known that 400 forces are contained within the Sitra Achra, as implied by the verse: “And behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men” (Bereishit 33:1).
Four hundred is the gematria of the phrase עין הרע—“ayin hara” (evil eye), as well as the word רעעין—(one who possesses an evil eye).
In addition, Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropol, in the sefer “Dayan Yadin,” teaches that when a person enters a synagogue, kisses the mezuzah, then bows and recites this pasuk, he draws the Shechinah and blessing upon himself for the entire day and removes the power of the evil eye from himself.
2. Against witchcraft and all negativity
(Tehillim 4:3)
Have kavanah for the Holy Name in this verse (highlighted):
בְּנֵ֥י אִ֡ישׁ עַד־מֶ֬ה כְבוֹדִ֣י לִ֭כְלִמָּה תֶּאֱבָ֣וּן רִ֑יק תְּבַקְשׁ֖וּ כָזָ֣ב סֶֽלָה
- “Bnei ish, ad meh kevodi lichlimmah, te’ehavun rik, tevakeshu chazav selah” -
(Sons of man! How long will my glory be for shame? How long will you love vanity and seek falsehood? Selah.)
Encoded in this pasuk is a Holy Name that nullifies negative forces. This Name is אעמ (look at it—do not pronounce it). It is cited in the Siddur of the Ari and formed from three verses in the Torah describing the Jews’ crossing of the Yam Suf, not according to the system of the Zohar ha-Kadosh but in the direct order—yashar.
3. Against witchcraft
(Tehillim 20:8)
Have kavanah for the Holy Name in this verse (highlighted):
אֵ֣לֶּה בָ֭רֶכֶב וְאֵ֣לֶּה בַסּוּסִ֑ים וַאֲנַ֓חְנוּ ׀ בְּשֵׁם־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣ינוּ נַזְכִּֽיר
- “Eleh varechev, ve’eleh vasusim, va’anachnu beShem Ado-nai Eloheinu nazkir” -
(Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we invoke the Name of the L-rd our G-d.)
The rashei tevot of the pasuk form a Holy Name that blocks witchcraft—אבובוביאנ (look at it—do not pronounce it).
4. Raising a sick person from bed
(Tehillim 7:2)
Have kavanah for the Holy Name in this verse (highlighted):
יְהוָ֣ה אֱ֭לֹהַי בְּךָ֣ חָסִ֑יתִי הוֹשִׁיעֵ֥נִי מִכָּל־רֹ֝דְפַ֗י וְהַצִּילֵֽנִי
- “Ado-nai Elohai, becha chasiti, hoshi’eini mikol rodfei, vehatzileini” -
(L-rd, my G-d, in You I have taken refuge; save me from all my pursuers and rescue me.)
Encoded in this pasuk is Hashem’s Holy Name, about which the Ari said that it raises a sick person from bed.

- “Ado-nai yis’adenu al eres devai; kol mishkavo hafachta becholyo” - (The L-rd will support him on his sickbed; You transform his entire bed in his illness.)
6. Protection from miscarriage
(Tehillim 17:8)

- “Shomreini ke’ishon bat ayin, betzel kenafecha tastireini” -

(Tehillim 20:2)
Have kavanah for the Holy Name in this verse (highlighted):

- “Ya’ancha Ado-nai beyom tzara, yesagevcha Shem Elohei Yaakov” -
(May the L-rd answer you on the day of distress; may the Name of the G-d of Jacob fortify you.)
When Yaakov Avinu crossed the river Yabok—where he encountered Esau’s angel—he had kavanah for the Name “Yabok.” The rashei tevot of the first four words have the gematria 112, the numerical value of “Yabok.”
- “Ado-nai hoshi’ah, hamelech ya’anenu veyom kor’einu” -
(L-rd, save us! May the King answer us on the day we call.)
The rashei tevot of the last three words form the word “Yabok.”

Rabbi Chaim Palagi teaches that Tehillim 45 contains a secret: one who does teshuvah becomes Hashem’s favorite—and it is contained in the following pasuk:
- “La-menatze’ach al shoshanim livnei Korach maskil shir yedidot” - (For the conductor: upon shoshanim. Of the sons of Korach. A maskil. A song of love.)
20. Saving property from thieves
(Tehillim 50:18)

- “Hashlech al Ado-nai yehavcha, vehu yechalkelcha; lo yiten le’olam mot la-tzadik” - (Cast your burden upon the L-rd, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous falter.)
24. Receiving a hundredfold blessing from Heaven
(Tehillim 90:1)
The words “Le-Moshe ish ha-Elohim” encode the word “me’ah” (100)—a hint to Yitzchak’s hundredfold blessing.

27. In a moment of danger (with kavanah for the word “geulah”)

- “Karevah el nafshi ge’alah; lema’an oyevai p’deni” - (Draw near to my soul and redeem it; for the sake of my enemies, rescue me.)
28. Protection from the five gevurot (judgments)
(Tehillim 90:17)
The ending נוּ “nu” appears five times in five words of the pasuk, breaking the five gevurot, like the letters of ManTzePaCH (the final letters).
- “Vihi no’am Ado-nai Eloheinu aleinu, uma’aseh yadeinu konenah aleinu, uma’aseh yadeinu konenehu” - (May the pleasantness of the L-rd our G-d rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us—establish the work of our hands.)
29. A blessing before traveling
(Tehillim 91:11)
This pasuk contains the secret of the 500 angels who guard a person.
The great Ramban called this pasuk “Rivkah’s blessing,” which she gave her son Yaakov before sending him to her brother Lavan, so that he would escape Esau’s revenge. (Ramban on the Akeidah)
- “Ki mal’achav yetzaveh lach, lishmorcha bechol derachecha” - (For He will command His angels concerning you, to guard you on all your ways.)
30. In a dangerous moment—from death

- “Lo hametim yehalelu Yah, velo kol yordei dumah” - (It is not the dead who praise the L-rd, nor those who descend into silence.)
31. So that one’s blessing does not pass to others (evil eye, envy)
(Tehillim 119:122)
- “Arov avdecha letov, al ya’ashkuni zedim” - (Guarantee Your servant’s welfare; let the arrogant not oppress me.)
32. Finding a wife
(Tehillim 32:6)
Zohar ha-Kadosh reveals that the following verse from Tehillim contains a secret for a man to find his mate:
עַל־זֹ֡את יִתְפַּלֵּ֬ל כָּל־חָסִ֨יד ׀ אֵלֶיךָ֮ לְעֵ֪ת מְ֫צֹ֥א רַ֗ק לְ֭שֵׁטֶף מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֑ים אֵ֝לָ֗יו לֹ֣א יַגִּֽיעוּ
- “Al zot yitpalel kol chasid eilecha le’et metzo, rak leshetef mayim rabbim elav lo yagi’u” - (Therefore let every pious person pray to You when You may be found; surely the flood of mighty waters will not reach him.)
33. For Rachamim
(Tehillim 145:9)
The mekubalim Rabbi Chaim Palagi and Rabbi Shlomo Offer advise reciting this pasuk before feeding animals, for rachamim, with the intention: “Just as I am merciful toward Your creatures, so please be merciful toward me.”
- “Tov Ado-nai lakol, verachamav al kol ma’asav” - (The L-rd is good to all, and His mercies are upon all His works.)
34. For “Tikun Evarim” (rectification of the limbs)
(Tehillim 51:12)
- “Lev tahor bera li Elohim, veruach nachon chadesh bekirbi” - (Create a pure heart for me, O G-d, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.)
Before immersing in the mikveh of the Ari (may his merit protect us), one may recite the pasuk from Tehillim: “Lev Tahor Bara Li Elohim.” Chazal teach: “Do not read ברא ‘bara’ (create), but rather אבר—‘evar’ (limb),” since everyone who immerses in a mikveh is as if performing “Tikun Evarim” (rectification of the limbs).
The gematria of the phrase לב טהור—“lev tahor” (pure heart) is 252. We know from the Torah that men have 248 limbs and women 252. Thus, this pasuk may be read as: “Lev Tahor (252) bara (limbs) for me, L-rd [rectify them].”
Gaon Rav Yaniv Assuri (shlita) explains that according to the Ari ha-Kadosh, the letters of this verse reveal the secret of the mikveh.
The first letters of the first three words, לב טהור ברא—(Lev Tahor Bara)—are (“Lamed,” “Tet,” “Bet”).
These three letters form two words that are fundamental to the purpose of the mikveh.
Immersion in a mikveh is called “tevilah,” whose root is “taval” (“Tet,” “Bet,” “Lamed”)—to immerse in a mikveh.
Rearranging these letters gives (“Bet,” “Tet,” “Lamed”)—the word “batel,” meaning “nullification” (the nullification of all sins, mistakes, problems, and troubles).

35. Strengthening memory
(Tehillim 119:49)
- “Zechar davar le’avdecha, al asher yichaltani” - (Remember Your word to Your servant, through which You gave me hope.)
Rabbi Yosef Karo (may his merit protect us) left us a powerful segulah for strengthening memory, taught to him by the Magid (the angel who studied Torah with him): recite the first pasuk of Tehillim 119 (zayin) ten times.
36. Mesugal le-zechirah—for a good memory
(Tehillim 76:8)
- “Atah nora atah, u-mi ya’amod lefanecha me’az apecha” - (You are awesome; who can stand before You when You are angry?)
The sofei tevot of three words in this pasuk form a Name that is “mesugal le-zechirah” (conducive to retaining a good memory)—דזכ. One should direct one’s kavanah toward the highlighted letters forming the Holy Name [look at it—do not pronounce it].
37. How to recite 90 Amens a day
(Tehillim 89:53)
- “Baruch Ado-nai le’olam amen (אדנ׳׳י) ve-amen (הוי׳׳ה)” - (Blessed is the L-rd forever. Amen and amen!)
It is well known that every Jew should recite 100 blessings and 90 “Amens” each day. In our times—including during the pandemic—it is difficult to reach the required number of blessings and Amens outside the synagogue.
The sefer “Keter Malchut” states that it is a good custom to recite the pasuk from Tehillim (89:53): “Baruch Ado-nai le’olam amen (אדנ׳׳י) ve-amen (הוי׳׳ה)”—45 times each day.
When saying “amen ve-amen,” one should direct one’s thoughts toward the combination of the Names
This passage will help a person make up the 90 “Amens” that one is obligated to say each day if one must remain alone at home and cannot go to the synagogue [to answer “amen” there].
Ben Ish Chai recited this verse 45 times every day after Birkat Kohanim, which follows the morning blessings.
The mekubalim also teach that one who recites 90 Amens a day protects himself from all forms of witchcraft.
38. For a good day
(Tehillim 97:11)
- “Or zarua la-tzadik, uleyishrei lev simchah” - (Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.)
Rabbi Chaim Palagi (may his merit protect us) advised reciting this pasuk 17 times (corresponding to the gematria of the word “tov”) every day for a good day.
39. For healing the eyes—recite 18 times
(Tehillim 38:11)
- “Libi secharchar, azavani kochi, ve’or einai gam hem ein iti” - (My heart throbs; my strength has left me, and even the light of my eyes is no longer with me.)
40. Finding a successful home (purchase or rental)—17 times
(Tehillim 84:4)
- “Gam tzipor matze’ah bayit, udror ken lah, asher shatah efrocheha; et mizbechotecha Ado-nai Tzevaot, Malki ve-Elohai” - (Even the bird finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself where she places her young. As for me, I am at Your altars, O L-rd of Hosts, my King and my G-d.)
41. Zera shel kayama (conceiving children)
(Tehillim 86:17)
Ben Ish Chai taught that for the birth of a child (when there is difficulty conceiving), one should draw upon the power of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, since the world was created through the power of these letters.
Before marital intimacy, one should recite the 22-letter alphabet, preferably on the day the wife immerses in the mikveh (it is also desirable for the husband to immerse that day).
Then recite the pasuk from Tehillim (86:17) 22 times:
- “Aseh imi ot letovah, veyir’u son’ai veyevoshu, ki atah Ado-nai azartani venichamtani” - (Show me a sign for good; let those who hate me see it and be ashamed, for You, O L-rd, have helped me and comforted me.)
The word “ot”, besides meaning “sign,” also means “letter.”
42. Opening the mouth of a mute
(Tehillim 91:2)
- “Omar la-Ado-nai, machsi u-metzudati; Elohai, evtach bo” - (I say of the L-rd: He is my refuge and my fortress, my G-d in whom I trust.)
The rashei tevot of the first three words form the Holy Name אלמ, one of Hashem’s 72 Names.
This Name resembles the word “ilem” (mute).
This very Name can influence and nullify muteness.
Whisper this pasuk (called “whispering” by the Sages) seven times into the ear of the mute person—child or adult, whether mute from birth or having stopped speaking out of fear—with kavanah for the Name אלמ.
43. For infertility—for the birth of children
Tehillim 145:14
- “Somech Ado-nai lechol ha-noflim, vezokef lechol hakefufim” - (The L-rd supports all who fall and straightens all who are bent.)
- “The L-rd supports all who fall…” - These are childless [women], who fall in their homes;
- “and straightens all who are bent” - for when the Holy One, blessed be He, grants them children, they stand upright.
Know that Leah Imeinu was likewise unloved in her home; when the Holy One, blessed be He, remembered her [and granted her children], she stood upright. Concerning this it is written: “But the L-rd saw that Leah was unloved (snuah).” For she performed an act like an enemy (ha-snuim). She was designated for the enemy (la-soneh). The arrangement was: the elder brother for the elder daughter, and the younger for the younger. She cried and said: “May it be Your will [Almighty] that I not fall to the lot [to marry] the wicked Esau.”
Leah’s children became her redemption for Jacob’s lack of love. Through them she “stood upright,” attaining the status of the mother of the family.
(Bereishit Rabbah 71:1)
44. For infertility—for the birth of children
Tehillim 69:34
- “Ki shome’a el evyonim Ado-nai, ve’et asirav lo vazah” - (For the L-rd hears the destitute and does not despise His prisoners.)
Chazal explain that “For the L-rd hears the destitute…” refers to Israel, as Rabbi Yochanan said: “Wherever the Torah says ‘poor,’ ‘needy,’ or ‘destitute,’ it is speaking of Israel”;
“and He does not despise His prisoners (asirim)”—these are childless [women], who are confined (asurot) to their homes.
When the Holy One, blessed be He, grants them children, they are released. Know that Leah Imeinu was likewise unloved in her home; when the Holy One, blessed be He, remembered her [and granted her children], she was released.”
45. Attracting good fortune—“Oseh Chayil”
Tehillim 118:16
– “Yemin Ado-nai romemah, yemin Ado-nai osah chayil” - (The right hand of the L-rd is exalted; the right hand of the L-rd performs mighty deeds).
Tehillim 18:40
– “Va-te’azreini chayil la-milchamah, tachri’a kamai tachtai” – (You girded me with strength for battle; You subdued beneath me those who rose against me);
